  • The best football player in history?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brad_Thorn

I was in the boozer last night and some News Ltd journalist near me was waxing about how Brad Thorn is the best footballer player to pull on a jersey, ever.

    I immediately scoffed.

But then I listened to what they were saying and they have a strong case.

He's won Origins, numerous NRL Premierships, Super Rugby competitions, Tri-Nations, Bledisloes and now he may well win the Rugby World Cup.

    Fcuk me.

What have I done? Had some big wanks?

Nothing wrong with big wanks ...it's all relative

Back to Thorn, I hate to say it but that journo is on the money

Brad Thorne is one of those honest toilers that just happened to be in the zone at the right time.

He was nowhere near as gifted as his resume depicts.

But he was a genuine champion at waltzing into established superstar teams that won everything.....Broncos, QLD, Aust, NZ......

Imagine if he'd signed with Souths in 2002? He would have ended up in Salford with nothing.

Melon is spot on, Thorn could play but was also in the right places at the right times.

It's a team sport, you can't assess individual ability by looking at team records

Brad Thorn is not in the best 200 players of all time

What would those News Ltd idiots know anyway?

I understand what your saying a bit like wayne swan happens to be in the right place at the right time...but unlike swan Thorn has been good enough through his skill set and talent to hold his place in some awesome teams

That's one large oxymoron. But on the topic, if the criteria is being in the right team at the right time, Thorne was a champ, but for individual brilliance Thorne was a chump.

                  Chook.

I am wondering if we should write to Andrew Voss and ask him,

I don't really give a fcuk about Brad Thorn but to diminish his achievements on the basis of 'right place, right time' seems a bit much.

He's played a central role in all of those teams.

He's the kind of hardened leader Easts don't have. I've always thought of him as a Steve Price style of player in terms of the affect he has on team mates.

He was a decent player...better in a champion team. Nowhere near the greatest.

                          Pipe,
he is no Finch thats for sure and Thorn was part of what made each of those teams great.
But there are plenty of better footballers that will not acheive the team records that Thorn has.

Thorn???? Good footballer, has a long list of achievements next to his name, but far from the best ever. What about Norm Provan? he won 10 premierships? How many players from any code can claim to have won 10 GF's? Is he the best player? Not by a long shot. As Tony said, footy is a team sport and you can't judge an individual on what his teams have achieved. Going by the criteria set by the journo, that would mean players like Steve Rogers, ET, Nathan Hindmarsh, Kevin Hastings just to name a few are total chumps.

Good player, but I have always wondered, how you can feel enough 'pride' to play for QLD and Australia, but then play for the All Blacks/Crusaders? It's one or the other. Weird.
