  • If they increase the salary cap...

I'd love to see the minimum wage get raised too... i know we don't want to lose our elite players to other sports but i also don't want to see all the extra money go to about 4 players per club... as athletes these guys only have a short amount of time in which to earn money... lockyer one of our games elite athletes has played for 16 years... now for front rowers and other forwards who may be the hard working toilers who don't get paid the big money and will have much shorter careers and will have very little opportunity to make some money from their chosen career...

I think its important to ensure that these players see some of the money that they help this game earn... If we really want to keep elite players on higher income we have to relax some of the rules regarding 3rd party sponsorships...

thats just my 2 cents would be interested to hear what others think...

    Absolutley.

The average wage in the NRL is <150k...compare that to the AFL where the avg is around 250k.

The distribution of income amongst professional sportsmen is a disgrace.

The avg has nothing to do with it rhyse, I think you're missing the point.

Agree whole heartedly though Gaz, being a fringe player or reserve grade player should be a plausible full time job, improve the quality of the depth and you improve the quality of the product.

        Great I love more ads.
        I love my foxtel increasing.
        I love ticket prices increases.

Best of all I am not going to have to wait long to pay $300 for a jersey.

my comment was a complete hypothetical... "if they increase the salary cap" and those things you just mentioned (bar your $300 jersey and tix prices) are likely to happen anyway with the impending broadcasting deal... i'm not in favour of more ads... though i would embrace a foxtel channel dedicated to rugby league if it came to be... but these things are going to happen anyway with the expansion of the game... my point was I hope that the wealth is spread rather than just handed out to a select few

How do you work this out a team has 25 in top squad
            Top 4 "marques' on $330K = $1.32M
            Next 5 - 2nd tier on $250K = $ 1.5M
that leave 16 to divide up the rest
$150K average only works if all 25 in the top squad are paid equally

But I agree the distribution is a disgrace.

It would be nice if the minimum was 100k on the books instead of 50k, I can assure you players get more than 50k minimum. Lockyer is on the books for 250k pa, Broncos have done a great job of avoiding being caught out.

If the cap was 4.5 mil you would fit your last 16 in at 100k each!

Lockyer could've taken a pay cut to keep good younger players at the club...he's that type of guy.

He can earn some 3rd party sponsorship money?

                  Freddy did?

Alfie had his face on loaves of bread.

That was at last seasons end with Rookie players who weren't resigned or upgraded. Apparentley what hes been on for years, Could have demanded 400 t 500k anywhere else. News limited Bronco's and Storm, storm were unlucky someone on the inside spilt the beans!

When I used to travel to Lang park for Roosters away games...and a linesman jumped up and down in celebration when the Broncos scored...bread loaves in the shops had Alfie's face all over them ... 15 years ago.

Isn't the minimum pay packet still $55,000?

                          From the top 25 list.
The following easts/jets players would be on close to/around the minimum:

                          T Arona
                          J Ford
                          B Fruian
                          M Kheirallah
                          K Linnett ?
                          W Mataka
                          S Naughton
                          R Pritchard
                          B Takairangi ?

not sure how the jets payroll works, or what payroll % each pays in the easts/jets partnership.

yeh not sure all those players are in our top 25... so not included in the cap... they'd get paid for the jets and match payments if they crack 1st grade

Compare <150k to many professions (even public servants)... it shows how little a number of pretty decent players are on for taking the centre stage every weekend, when unknown randoms are getting similar or greater incomes.

What would raising the cap do though? I reckon the top players/sellers would still take the lion's share (and complain it's too little STILL), people will still switch codes (you decide if SBW leaving was such a bad thing) and various teams who can't find the funds will possibly fold.

Glad I don't have to deal with this, that's all I have to say.
