Thanks I'll remember that in depth analysis when thinking back over the season where we just made up the numbers

Haven't seen a cat act like that to win a game for a while.
Call me cynical, but the fix is on!

The Nrl wants/needs them and the tigpies in the semis.
Already 2 qld teams, 1 vic team, manly, st merge, tigpies, kiwi team, maybe knights/souffs.
A cross-section of the whole east coast. Good for business I'd say.
Spot on Chris.Souths play the Broncos next week, might be more of the same.

Mike you are right it was a penalty, but the issue is that the ref did not see it. So for it to be awarded a penalty by the video ref it has to be a reportable offence, which it clearly was not. Luke is one of the biggest grubs in the game, and Russell will probably give him an oscar after his dive tonight.

Mind you why Thurston went for the glory pass with 3 minutes to go instead of slotting a field goal to put the game to bed is beyond me.

There shouldn't be different sets of rules for different parts of the game.

What is a penalty on any Friday game needs to be a penalty in golden point, a semi or a preliminary final.
There was in that game. It was a wet and there were plenty of tackles with similarities that went un-penalised all game. Difference is when a big softy gets a "Love tap" (quote by Thurston) in front of the posts he is put into a coma and gets a penalty.
I'm fine with penalising it, if the ref picks it up straight away.
Ref couldn't have been in a better spot to make a decision, of which he did and decided it wasn't a penalty. Then old Hamstead in the video ref box says, "contact was made high".
Soft. If it was against us, I can't imagine the uproar.

That was what lost it for them, but penalty stole it from them.

Stay down, milk a penalty [of course the opposition is not allowed to hit you high, or stick their elbows in your neck etc]...and win the game.

              As 'Lucy Burns' once said:

                We have a winner!

Typical NRL refs - the rule says the video ref can't get involved unless it's reportable so an innocuous high tackle goes on report so that the video ref can get involved. Absolute bollocks - if you are going to flaunt the rule then just be consistent and give the video ref the authority to step in at will.

BTW, according to the post match refereeing report the reason that the Dwyer hit on JWH in the semi last year didn't get penalised was because the video ref deemed it penalisable but not reportable - hence no call.

                  http://www.nrl.com/luke-in-trouble-f...9/default.aspx

Accused of taking a dive in Friday night's controversial NRL thriller, South Sydney hooker Issac Luke says the spray he copped from North Queensland was nothing compared to the dressing down he received from his own mother after the 26-24 win.

At the post-match press conference, Cowboys coach Neil Henry and captain Johnathan Thurston didn't mince words about Luke's reaction to being hit high in golden point extra time, but on the drive home it was mother Sharron who cut the deepest.

"Yeah she said, 'I didn't know you were Russell Crowe's nephew,'" Luke said of being bluntly compared to the Rabbitohs' actor owner, despite nursing a bloodied jaw he initially thought was broken.

Luke said claims by the Cowboys, and his own flesh and blood, that he took a dive were wrong, as he was genuinely stung by James Segeyaro's accidental contact over the top.

However the Kiwi international commendably conceded he might have attempted to get to his feet if the match, and the Rabbitohs' season, wasn't on the line in golden point.

Despite being injured, Luke admitted he stayed down longer than usual at the encouragement of teammates, who could sense they were about to be handed a dramatic win.

"I didn't want to lay down there but a few of the boys were saying stay down but I'm not a big fan of laying down anyway," said an honest Luke at Souths' recovery session on Saturday.

"It was a bit staged that one. My mum and I watched that after and I looked at my mum and I put my head down, and she was just laughing her head off.

"I thought I'd broken my jaw. I'm not a big fan of laying down anyway but I couldn't eat last night. I had to drink soup, my white mouth guard was red with blood. I was going to eat breakfast with my kids but I had to drink."

In the definitive moment of the match, Luke lay motionless on the ground after being accidentally struck by the Cowboys' replacement hooker.

The pause in play allowed video referee Sean Hampstead to view the incident, and he sent the message down that Segeyaro should go on report, meaning a penalty kick was gifted to Souths from right in front, 30 metres out - keeping their season alive.

On the field, a furious Thurston yelled at the referee that the tackle was nothing more than a "f***ing love tap" and Henry described the incident as no worse than numerous other tackles in the course of a match.

Segeyaro, left shattered by conceding the penalty which cost his team the chance to cement a top-four spot, entered Souths' sheds after the match to talk to Luke.

"He blew up at the time but then after I just told him: `You know I wouldn't just stay down there for nothing,'" he said.

"He came and asked while we were in the showers, 'did I get you a good one?' And I said 'yeah.'"

Nathan Merritt (quad) is unlikely to play next week, but John Sutton (hand) is a better chance of taking on Brisbane.

Exactly. The point however is that this cat acted like he needed to be carried off until the penalty then hopped up and was all good again.

and if the roosters were in the same position you would be jumping up and down that a penalty was awarded.

I thought it was also legit though not sure that many referees would give a penalty to decide it on golden point, well I'm sure we wouldn't have received a penalty had it happen to us.

I think that is the point though, last year in a do or die final, JWH got hit in an illegal high tackle that knocked him senseless (without milking or staying down) which should have resulted in a penalty to the Roosters and a win in regulation time. Yet inexplicably none of the 3 refs deemed it an illegal hit.

It is the inconsistency of the refs that gets fans of all teams frustrated and upset.

Aside from the Issac Luke milk, i gotta say the Cows really screwed up last night. In the last 10mins they dropped the ball 2 or 3 times and invited the rabbits back into the game. Based on last nights game the cowboys look like they are just making up the numbers. Then JT throws an intercept! Up till then I really enjoyed the friday night games. Would have been perfect watching St scum lose then Souffs go out the back door for 2011.

Lets see how 'lucky' the rabbits are in the remaining games. If i were newcastle i would be worried. very worried.
