  • Blair apologises for role in NRL brawl

Melbourne forward Adam Blair has apologised for his role in Friday night's all-in brawl at Brookvale Oval that threatens to rub him and several others out for the rest of the NRL season.

Blair and Manly backrower Glenn Stewart are likely to have their cases referred straight to Wednesday night's sitting of the NRL judiciary.

The instigated sparked a brawl which attracted every player on the field and some sitting on the Storm interchange bench.

In a statement released on Sunday night, Storm officials claimed their players left the bench because they feared for Blair's safety after several Manly players swamped him.

The Kiwi international was at a loss to explain why he continued his battle with Stewart after the pair had been sin-binned.

"I would like to apologise to everyone for the incident with Glenn on Friday night," Blair said ahead of Monday's sitting of the match review committee.

"I'm extremely disappointed to be involved in such an incident that does not put the game I love in a positive light, especially (for) my family, friends and all rugby league supporters.

"Hindsight is a wonderful thing and if I had my time again I would have done things differently.

"It was a spur of the moment reaction, that was not planned and to be honest it happened that quickly I still don't really know why it occurred."

Storm chief executive Ron Gauci said he had interviewed his players involved as part of the club's internal review of the fight.

While Blair is in danger of a lengthy ban, so too are those who left the bench to join in, including Sisa Waqa and Jaiman Lowe.

"Anyone who has seen the incident from Friday night would agree it was unfortunate and extremely difficult for everyone involved, especially Adam's teammates nearby," Gauci said.

"Whilst the (interchange) players accept that entering the altercation was improper, they felt that the need to preserve the safety of their teammate was paramount.

"The players have assured me that their intention was never to further inflame the situation."

The match review committee will hand down its findings on Monday, though the NRL is also likely to fine both clubs over the incident.

Good to see Bennett calling for the players heads, it really shows how far the dragons have fallen when the coach needs 2 other teams to suffer heavy suspensions before he can have any chance of winning the comp. I'm sure the fix will go in so the dragons can go back to back.

It'll be equally as interesting to see what happens to newcastle this week. I'm sure the NRL would love to sell the bunnies fairytale run into the finals.

I wondered if there was a way Gallop could screw both Manly and Melbourne. I bet he was grinning when he saw them do it themselves.

Gallop would privately be jumping for joy!

Puts the 'feel-good focus' on the tigers, saints, souffs, knights, and the Locky fairytale!
        Good for business!!!

It's farcical that they both got the same number of players sited.

          Classic NRL square up.

Manly were way out of line. The second brawl was all them. That match reignited my hatred for those swine.

Too right, the "innocent" choir boy Brett Stewart showed his true colours, he cannot blame Alcohol and a chick with a dodgy father for this assault.

Not sure what he's apologising for exactly. Despite all the people taking the moral high ground and over doing the political correctness this will be used in advertising campaigns, used to build up the replay in the final series and re-run plenty of times on footy shows.

No one got hurt, it's just part of the game and we can't expect players not to have emotions and frustrations otherwise it'd just be a boring game to watch. He's probably done a bigger service to the game than discredit, imagine if these two teams make the Grand Final.... the NRL will lap it up despite 'not condoning it'.

Other than Cherry-Evans and the young Hopoate, Manly are entirely unlikeable.

Like 'em or not they're a club who's built from within and have had a pretty good run over the last 5-6 years, a lot of clubs could learn a two or thing.

There coach is from Penirth, the stewart bros from the gong, rose from us, lyon form the eels, they have bought well, not built from with in, in fact apart from interstate and the warriors, it is nigh on impossible to build from within and be successful, just ask penrith and parra.

Even the great St George team, poached the best that was available

The current salary cap has made sure it is near impossible to build from with in and maintain the same personnel.
