The role of the coach has changed dramatically in the last 30-40 years and they have more influence over the game and their teams then the coaches of the early years. Back in those days, training was basically a couple of laps around the park, half an hour with the ball and then a gazillion hours at the pub. The season went from March through to early September and there was very little else for the coach to do. Compare that to the modern coach who works 11 months of the year and in a lot of cases 7 days a week during that time and you will see why more credence was given to the record of the modern day mentor.

Holloway was mentioned because of his excellent record, as were Norm Provan, Jack Rayner and others, but in the end they called it like they did. To call the group which includes such people as Ron Coote and Ron Massey morons, really paints you in a poor light. They might be many things but morons is not one of them.
Putting Gould and Fulton ahead of him makes them morons. Halloway should've been there and for that matter so should Clive Churchill. Their records speak for themselves, as far as who was the best coach Jack Gibson should've won in a landslide, the innovator. Not only did Jack win 5 premierships he also took Newtown to a final, Saints to a GF and coached Easts to semi appearances in 67 and 68 after they failed to win a game in 66.

What about the effect they had on the game.
Gibson's effect on the game shits all over Bennetts

Jack was the first to take notice of statistics. Got the idea from the NFL when he visited there in 74 I think?

            Chook.

Yep. He also brought back the boot polish under the eyes to counter the glare under lights. Watch the Amco Cup midweek Roosters games with Fairfax, Schubert, Artie and Stumpy Stevens wearing the boot polish under the eyes.

Mr Handshake has never been innovative. All he's had is star studded rep teams to work with.

Oh Bennett is clever and he gets the best out of the gibberers he coaches, that is what he brings and he does it well and I think he is one of the greats, but not the greatest.

Bennett is a very good defensive coach. He had the brilliance at the Broncs but not the sox.

The best thing Bennett done for him ,self was not come to this club weather you like it or not.
Nick Politis and Ron Jones have a mile between them yet two of the same.

I can't believe that Gould is there and not Ryan. Gould simply applied what he learned under the Wok. At one point, half the coaches in the NRL were ex Ryan players.

Bennett has the results but he is a man manager, not an innovator. Ryan and Gibson are the two great innovators of the modern era.

They took rep coaching into account as well, hence Gould finished in front of Ryan, Gould also won premierships at two different clubs, something Ryan failed to do.

Mickey Mouse could coach our rep teams.
