Community rallies to support Cronulla Sharks development proposal
In a twist on typical community rallies, hundreds of pro-development supporters are expected to turn out this Sunday, November 20 from 2pm to show solidarity for the proposed Cronulla Sharks retail, entertainment and housing complex at Woolooware.
This community-based initiative will see actor Brendan Cowell, Sharks club chairman Damian Irvine and Sutherland Shire Councillor Kent Johns address the rally, which will start at the Western Carpark, with the crowd then marching to the Eastern Carpark.
Members from all sections of the Sutherland Shire community will be attending including the elderly, young families, local businesses, sports participants, and Sharks fans in order to show their support for the employment, economic and social benefits that the proposal would bring the region.
"I was incredibly buoyed when I heard that our community had organised this show of support and I look forward to meeting everyone on Sunday and seeing the very people and groups that will benefit from this development directly," says Irvine.
"This is a well-thought out, environmentally-sensitive community development. People are well aware that this will bring more than 1500 much-needed jobs and 700 much-needed homes into the area and they like the parklands and community facilities that are included."
Organisers are hosting a letter-writing stall to encourage supporters to make their views known before submissions to the State government Planning Assessment Commission close on December 5, following the remarkable success of campaigns from the "Support the Sharks Development" facebook group and the www.supportthesharksdevelopment.com.au website.
Sharkies staff are preparing for a big post-rally crowd in the Summertime Bar afterwards where there will be a sausage sizzle and live music.
