ARL to consider extra Storm funding

Australian Rugby League Commission chairman John Grant has left the door open for a possible funding boost for the Storm to help grow the game in Melbourne.

Grant says the Storm are a long-term club and deserve to be given every possible assistance.

"It's tough territory down here. This is AFL territory," Grant told reporters.

"It's a bit like AFL going to Greater Western Sydney.

"So they need a lot of support through the administration in order to be a team that's going to prosper over the long term.

"This is about sustainable footy clubs. When you put a stake in the ground around a footy club like this, this has got to be the 100-year footy club.

"So you've got to put in."

Grant, who attended the Storm's season launch in Melbourne on Thursday night, said the new commission was aware of the different challenges facing certain clubs.

"At the moment, the funding that comes from the Commission is pretty level across all the clubs," he said.

"Over time, we need to understand how that's working for various clubs because each club has different opportunities.

"The Broncos have got a bigger opportunity than the Melbourne Storm.

"So we've got to think about how we can help them get the best performance that they can do and then make sure we balance it up so they get sustainability.

"We will look at where the money's being placed today, what available money we can increase to make that grow and where we can place it tomorrow to make sure it gives the game the best helping hand.

"The Melbourne footy club is a long-term footy club so we've got to make sure it stays that way.

"Melbourne have been here for 15 years and they've been such a great club for that period of time.

"Melbourne's a very key part of our business so that's our responsibility to make sure that they know that we're thinking of them and they feel very included."

As a roosters fan who has recently moved south of the border, it is about time Channel 9 wake up. Unless you have foxtel you have non chance of watching an league live, even the storm games. The thursday, friday and sunday games which 9 is hosting are not even on Gem. Absolute joke. I called the NRL about this, and they said it is up to the network host as we have nothing to do with it. Nothing to do with ut, its the NRL, please wake up. If you want to build the game, show more games live on free to air around the whole country. Use Channels like Gem or give a game to Foxtel live.

Yeah, when I was down there for a short period in 07/08 it was hopeless.
Lost track of league for over a year because of it.
We give AFL fair coverage everywhere, why not league?

Edwomble, first of all welcome to the forum and welcome to Victoria! I moved to Melbourne last July and haven't missed anything. I don't have Foxtel but I do have a T-box with Telstra. Yes, I can't see the games live but I can see all of them a few days later at a time that suits me as they are archived on Bigpond Sport. You could watch Roosters games 24 hours a day if you wanted! Each club has it's own channel and Freddy hosts a nightly program called NRL Daily with John Gibbs. At $11 dollars a month, it is so much cheaper than Foxtel and I can see Freddy every day. Highly recommend it!

Look with Dave at the top it's still the old thing with absolutely no changes.

Oh sorry... out of the blue they took the populist move of rolling back the finals system to the one that the AFL took from League. People are welcoming it, but it was:
                      1) Out of the blue (actually first Time me and others knew the new commission was in power and that Gallop wasn't getting punted as part of the transition.)
                      2) Without consultation.
                      3) Something like a week before the start of the season.

If that's the way the same face, same smell new commission os gonna run with more controversial issues then what a farking joke to be frank!

The fact Dave's come out as a strong backer of Tony Abbott, and used the NRL to back his political opinion is another matter I think needs more criticism (NRL's footy, not politics!!) But I just generally think he needs to be sacked for change to happen... so ignore that point for now.

Hi redwhiteblue, I want to watch the games live, I cant watch a game if I know the result especially a loss.
After living in Euriope for the past 4 years, I'm really keen to get involved this season, but if we play our games on Nine, then I will struggle. I have Foxtel, which is great, but in this day and age, Channel 9 need to wake up and either put the games on Gem, or Go, or give it to Foxtel just like the AFL did last year.
Cant wait for 3 weeks time, Roosters v Storm

I understand and agree with you regarding Gem. They stuck the cricket on there over the summer, so why not the NRL? I do love the T-box though because the games stay in the archives and you can watch them anytime you like. When I arrived back from nearly a month in London, I was able to catch up on everything I missed. Yes, that's right Roosters..as soon as I leave the country you go and beat the likes of Canterbury, St George and Melbourne! Typical..!!

Update: Manly v New Zealand is being shown live on Channel 9 in Melbourne today at midday. Yippee..don't care for either team but it's live NRL and it's the grand final replay so I'll be watching!
