Not so practical these days but I loved the Amco Cup as a kid. We often did okay in years where we didn't in the main comp. Gave us something to cheer about.

Unfortunately, in those dark days it was a bit like souffs winning a charity shield. Something to crow about and made us feel like we had actually won something.

I miss all those mid-week competitions. The KB Cup, the Tooths cup etc..back in those days, Dad was still alive and we used to stay up late on a Wednesday night to watch Parra and Balmain a lot. We also watched the schoolboys competition which was screened on Saturday mornings with Patrician Brothers Fairfield (some bloke called Peter Sterling) and Holy Cross Ryde (too many cousins to mention from that school) sigh..life was so simple back then...

Reminds me of someone I used to sit with at games. They said if I'm going to sit with ferals, at least they are Roosters ferals...

Yeah it was good at the time.
I had a great night at Lleichardt oval when we made the final against combined Brisbane..............even though we lost, just.
No one gave us a hope.
Probably the only good game Dane Sorensen played for us.

Never forget King Wally holding up the trophy wearing our proud colours with City Ford emblazoned across the front.
Him and Hastings would've made a great halves pairing.

I am only a new member of the forum but it seems some of my all time favourite players are right here if I am not mistaken - Craig S, Kevin H and Johnny Brass. I will give a brief intro - I was in national service and when I was discharged in early 1972 the Commonwealth Bank placed me in the Oxford St Bondi Junction branch. I was newly married to my Queensland bride and we took up a flat at North Randwick. I would have lunch at Easts Leagues Bistro two or three times a week, and was in the queue one day when a gent ahead of me was asked to leave because of his long hair - it was Ian Chappell.

My wife and I would go to see the floor show every Saturday night, some amazing acts - and stop at Harry's Foot Long hot dog stand around the corner before heading home. One of my workmates took me to Redfern Oval for the first pre-season game game in 1972 - I am sure that this was the first game that A Beetson and R Coote played in Roosters colours. I have been hooked on the Chooks ever since.

Every weekend, I would drive to wherever the Roosters were playing. At first, this wasn't a problem - but later when we lived at Lakemba with two young kids, going to matches at places like Manly and Cronulla became a bit too much for my wife, so I was on my own. But do remember one Sunday arvo at Leichhardt Oval when Bobby Fulton was playing for us - I would always watch the reserve game as well, and our small family was settled down on the hill. Bob F spread out a blanket behind us for his small family (two daughters I think) before heading off to the sheds. My two sons ended up playing with Bozo's girls (none of the kids more than 5 years old).

I did want to introduce myself as a new forum member, but back onto football now. I was of course introduced to the the Chooks when we had one of the best sides of all time, and won back to back in 1974-75 under the immortal Jack Gibson. I was at the SCG for both matches. In 1974 Fairfax with his long blonde locks was allowed into the Leagues Club because he was an entertainer on stage when the the team appeared with the shield. I doubt if he could have come for lunch the next day. I loved the way Fairfax played in attack off Beetson. Artie would run to the line, turn around with his legs wide apart like the Colossus of Rhodes, ball held in both hands above his head and deliver a two foot pass to a flying Fairfax. Fairy handled the transition from RU to league so well (as did Johnny Brass), but they had the best mentor in Jack Gibson.

I will make a separate post about the Amco Cup soon.
So happy to have found this forum and kindred spirits.

Know what you mean, a lot of us have similar stories Mick and the regrets that go with them. One of the joys of getting older - reflection. An unexamined life is a life not worth living.

I was fortunate to meet quite a few of the Western Division team that won the first version of the Amco Cup. Terrific men, very humble and always willing to give of their time. If any you get the chance grab hold of Ian Heads book 'The Night the Music Died'. It's all about the birth of the cup and that 1974 Western Division team. It's a great read (and I get a mention in it too!)

And Fairfax couldn’t get into the leagues club due to his hardly offensive hair style , so there was that
