  • Hazen El Mazri announces retirement

RUGBY league's greatest pointscorer Hazem El Masri will retire from the NRL at the end of the season.

El Masri, who holds a host of records within the game, made the announcement today at Belmore Sports Ground where he began his illustrious career with the Bulldogs in 1996.

He bows out with a host of records that will stand for years to come, including the most career points and goals scored by any player in the game's 102 seasons.

The 33-year-old winger also holds the NRL point scoring record for a single season with 342 points (16 tries and 139 goals) in the 2004, as well as a host of club records.

His 305 first grade matches are the most by any Bulldogs player, while he is the club's greatest pointscorer, goalkicker and tryscorer and holds records for the most goals (11) in a match (v South Sydney in 2003) and most points (34) in a game (v Wests Tigers in 2004).

In total, he has scored 2208 points, including 154 tries and 846 goals.

Yet his feats could have been even greater as he wasn't the Bulldogs first choice goal kicker until after the retirement of Daryl Halligan in 2000.

In fact, it wasn't until Halligan was injured in 1997 that El Masri first kicked for the Bulldogs.

He surprassed Andrew Johns as the all-time highest point scored in this season's opening match against Manly.

His goalkicking average is an incredible 82 per cent.

He has also played for Australia, NSW and his native Lebanon.

But El Masri's off-field achievements are perhaps even more significant and he is one of the game's greatest role models.

Havng emigrated to Australian in 1988, he took up league at high school and was the code's first high profile muslim player.

He has won numerous awards for his off-field services.

Just me... or is that a REALLY poorly written article with numerous grammatical errors, and not much continuity?

    That said... WOW... big news!

    I'll miss him...

        Now you're catching on.

In all seriousness, El Masri has been an absolute star for the Dogs and one of the NRL's good blokes. Good luck to him.

Yeah, as a Roosters fan I've cursed him many times, but agreed... legend at every level in Rugby League. Wish him all the best for his future...

                Will you guys attend?

Which raises the question about who would we, as Dogs' fans, reciprocate for? I think if we can, Steve Price's farewell.

Interesting end to our game against the Cowboys on friday night. Most of the players had gone down the tunnel except for Jonathon Thurston who was finishing off an interview. The Bulldog fans stayed behind to cheer him off.

JT's reaction was of surprise, when he looked up. He stopped for a moment then raised his arms to say thanks.

A cynic in the crowd, could have been me, suggested that was because we want him to come back in 2011.

I am as likely to attend Hazems final game as a Bulldogs fan is likely to attend either Willie or Anastas last game.

I have nothing against El Masri and will attend and give him my own personal farewells whenh we play them .I just would not pay my money to watch one of there other matches

Willie will be like Benny Elias, he will never really go away.

I suspect that there are other Bulldog supporters who feel the same after his book came out. We know, at least, that the Bullfrog will be there for a chat. [i should stick one of those little heads with the rolling eyes here]

We can afford him, the trick will be working him into the cap. From a timing perspective Ryan, Kimmorley and most likely Patten (That's nearly $1mill right there) will be finishing up. We have replacements for both Ryan and Patten already in the system. Besides, that is some time away if it actually comes to fruition.

The main issue with JT is the work he does with the Aboriginal communities in North Queensland. There's a few other factors as well, so it's more than a money issue.

I think there might be some golf on TV the same day that Hazem retires, shame that the two collided but what can you do.

                              El Mazri is something special.
I will not be there but think its a great gesture.

Mentioning Price in the breath as Hazem is an insult to Hazem
