RUGBY league's greatest pointscorer Hazem El Masri will retire from the NRL at the end of the season.
El Masri, who holds a host of records within the game, made the announcement today at Belmore Sports Ground where he began his illustrious career with the Bulldogs in 1996.
He bows out with a host of records that will stand for years to come, including the most career points and goals scored by any player in the game's 102 seasons.
The 33-year-old winger also holds the NRL point scoring record for a single season with 342 points (16 tries and 139 goals) in the 2004, as well as a host of club records.
His 305 first grade matches are the most by any Bulldogs player, while he is the club's greatest pointscorer, goalkicker and tryscorer and holds records for the most goals (11) in a match (v South Sydney in 2003) and most points (34) in a game (v Wests Tigers in 2004).
In total, he has scored 2208 points, including 154 tries and 846 goals.
Yet his feats could have been even greater as he wasn't the Bulldogs first choice goal kicker until after the retirement of Daryl Halligan in 2000.
In fact, it wasn't until Halligan was injured in 1997 that El Masri first kicked for the Bulldogs.
He surprassed Andrew Johns as the all-time highest point scored in this season's opening match against Manly.
His goalkicking average is an incredible 82 per cent.
He has also played for Australia, NSW and his native Lebanon.
But El Masri's off-field achievements are perhaps even more significant and he is one of the game's greatest role models.
Havng emigrated to Australian in 1988, he took up league at high school and was the code's first high profile muslim player.
He has won numerous awards for his off-field services.
