  • Classic Chooks games

So, just watching stuff on kayo and decided to watch the 74 & 75 grand finals , went to both I might add (12 & 13 I was) …cause why not ! You can never get enough Artie I reckon …..how good was Rex Mossops commentary on the '75 , shits all over Ginnane and Voss attempts at sensational hyperbole

(and your fave classic game are ? )

The Roosters club site has a stack of games folk can view - classic games/ grand finals wins from 1974 and matches going back to 2018

    https://www.roosters.com.au/watch/fu...?sessionPage=4

Apart from the Grand Finals - a few include

1996 - Monday Night Football - Roosters vs Bronco's with the exception of getting out of the car park

2010 - Week 1 Qualifying Final - Roosters vs Wests Tigers

2000 - Preliminary Final - Roosters vs Newcastle Knights

1998 - Week 2 of Finals - Roosters vs Knights

A few games appearing on you tube, some just edited highlights but some also full replays of the telecast of the day ( which a lot were edited for tv broadcast ) , i'm just watching Easts vs Manly at the Sports Ground from 1980, Ken Wright, two brilliant tries.

This is on you tube, only highlights but i remember being at Kogarah that day, the mix up between Schubert and Boustead that lead to Steve Morris's try happened almost in front of where i was seated. I remember Noel Cleal's blockbuster try and Barry Andrews try after the great combination with Marty Gurr. This was back in the day when both teams would be happy with a draw.

That was a great Roosters team. I loved the way league was played in those days. I counted 6 hip drops- but obviously hips were stronger in those days because the ball carrier just got up and played the ball . I wonder if that spear tackle on Hastings was penalised? John Tobin was one of the greatest players never to represent Australia-along with Kevin Hastings

1980 was a great year, lost the first three games but ended up being minor premiers.. Hastings came of age at halfback in 1980, it was criminal that inter state politics got in the way of him representing Australia
This game against St George from memory Easts butchered quite a few tries in great scoring positions. I can remember so clearly the mix up between Schubert and Boustead which lead to Boustead dropping the ball and Morris pouncing on it for the try. Marty Gurr had a great match this game also, he was a very under rated fullback.

I remember that Easts v St George game. Thanks for the memories.

I think I recall losing our first semi then whipping Wests 41-5 (or something thereabouts) in the next semi.
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.

Maybe somebody can confirm I got the year/round right... the first Easts game I watched (where I wasn't supporting the Steelers in the Gong) was round 14 in 1998.

My memory is that Cronulla were up early on and we chased them down. Also... I caught a ball that flew into the crowd and felt all big. Then I tried kicking it back to the field but completely shanked it & it went nowhere.

I notice a few notable Chook Pen favourite players in the Team in that game you mention - Julian Bailey / Brendan Hurst / Justin Dooley / Nathan Wood plus Robert Miles / James Pickering and Nigel Gaffey who were all outs.

i'm actually amazed at the amount of classic games on kayo , I thought the tv stations back in the 70s and early 80s recycled the tapes on a weekly basis ...?

I noticed there are quite a few on you tube also, some in full form on what was the TV telecast at the time and some just highlights. Watched Parramatta vs East at Cumberland Round 2 from 1980 and also East vs Manly at the Sports Ground 1980, round 14.

Highlights of the Major semi in 1981 between East and Parramatta, a very undisciplined East that day after they absolutely demolished Parramatta a few weeks earlier at the same ground.Heartbreaking game which they should have won and gone straight into the Grand Final but lost in extra time.
Interesting try from Ron Hilditch , i love how the panel is split on it, i keep looking at it and think it is ok but there is still some doubt about it.
