I think no hard and fast rule should be laid down but as fans we want to see our team do well so we hope and trust the best team gets selected each week. When out of form players repeatedly get chosen it’s hard to understand and sit by quietly watching the boys get thrashed.

On the original topic - you raise some good points and I think we all either consciously or unconsciously do this when coming to our opinions on all players/staff to varying degrees.

In the end we are all individuals who will have different criteria and different opinions and views and really that's what makes a forum interesting. We all go a bit hard on both the negatives and positives at times but hey that's being human. There's no need for a cookie cutter style template.

But yeah we could do with a dose of have a good look at yourself from time to time.

Pretty much I agree - as long as they make the right decisions around hanging up the boots. I'm happy we got JWH and Toops for another year in saying that - but they are both close to the end and I'd hate for their sake, the teams sake and the fans that they haven't gone a year too long. I wouldn't want those two names legacy to be soured due to inevitably age reasons leading to poor performance.

I reckon the respect for these 2 should be enough to make next season a special one. Chooks NRL Premiers 2024.

Certainly love to see these two Roosters legends go out on their own terms.... BUT... the club must manage the succession correctly and also make sure we have adequate cover for injuries or game management required for these legends.
Toops turns 32 in a couple of weeks, so probably one more year will see him out, he's on 230 games, so he would have to play into 2026 to make 300, can't see it happening.

At least they are able to go out on their terms. Which was one of my points in the OP. Would've hated for them to go out like Cords, Friend or Bmoz

Yeah agreed about both. Which begs the question from my OP. When should a player reach that status? Is it premiership success? number of games? Rep/leadership honours?
I think the notion of "it depends with each player" is to grey.

Coach Robinson should be except too - 12th Year , 3 Premierships and Life Member

How about something different - Support all the players and Coaching Staff.

In short, I don't think there's a criteria, you've simply gotta earn your stripes if you want the kinda status where you get to choose your retirement. In our current team, I'd say only JWH and Toops would have such status. While neither are technically 1 club players... both really only technically played for other clubs, with their reputations being forged at Bondi.

Importantly both have won 3 premierships, ALWAYS performed well, played through painful injuries where necessary and taken unders to the club's advantage. 2013, 2018 and 2019 quite frankly... if Toops & JWH demanded market rate, we wouldn't have been able to afford the quality that we had.

Arguably Rads has been afforded a longer rope on the basis that he's a local junior, a fan favourite, has bagged 2 premierships and his single criticism is that he plays with too much passion. Billy Smith can enter this conversation too as he's never been dropped despite lotsa long-term injuries. On that note (and I think Mark Bouris has confirmed this during various interviews), I think our leadership team believes strongly in ENERGY. Personally I wouldn't call this sorta treatment a 'longer rope'. Rather... I think that our club wants people to turn up to training with the right attitude. If you look at Carney, Hastings, Nikorima, Flanno...etc, poor attitude is what'll get you ghosted by Robbo - he won't take shyte no matter who you are. On the flip side, if (like Billy Smith) you show up first to training bursting with positive energy/enthusiasm EVERY DAY despite being crippled by injuries, you will not get sacked.

So IMO nobody gets a 'longer rope', you've simply gotta have the right attitude. This includes putting it in at training... if you're a soft fark then it'll come through in your attitude as you won't put in enough effort to match your claim to a spot in the team. Latrell's an example here. He wanted to be our FB & earn $1m+ a year in the role but lacked the drive to lose 20kg and get himself in a position where he's doing 200m-300m a game. You'd love to keep him but if he's gonna be unrealistic in contract negotiations without proving he's willing to put in the hard work BEFORE demanding the big dollars & Australian captain's jersey at club level then IMO that's an attitude issue.

I don't think you could structure it. We all see and feel things differently so it will always be debatable.

My kids 1st GF was 2010. They cried when the full-time whistle was blown which cut me up no end. 3 years later, more tears but this time they were happy ones. Ditto 2018/19 Those 3 premierships mean more to me than the others because I shared them with my kids. The players in those 3 premiership winning teams will always be untouchables.

Has this idiot gone all folksy country bumpkin ??? Robinson wears the blame for our position this season, his failed experiments in positional play, persistance in the use sub standard players, dropping of Walker instead of coaching him, have lead to a lack of confidence and confusion amongst the players.
