  • Cut them some slack? Or throw them to the wolves?

When should certain roosters be given EXTRA leeway/love by the chookpenners?

I want to start by saying that I believe no one is bigger than the club. From uncle Nick down to the players on development contracts, or Robbo down to the administration staff. People are also entitled to their opinions and no one is immune from criticism. This thread is really about how much criticism is warranted and when should we back off?

This season there has been at least a dozen different roosters players or members of the coaching staff that have been bagged with calls for their heads. Sometimes this has been justified (I mean we are underachieving thus far). And sometimes its been an over the top reaction to a poor performance (which admittedly I myself have been guilty of).

But this got me thinking, as passionate fans, with high expectations, who live and die by the success or failure of our great footy club every weekend, which players/coaches should be cut a little slack? Is there a CRITERIA that we can agree on to say, a slight drop in form for this particular player is okay? Should we be more loyal to players that are loyal to us, regardless of injuries and suspensions? Or this player deserves a longer rope?

Passion, loyalty, love for a team are qualities in players that are hard to measure, but these are attributes that us fans admire. And so when we talk about loyalty and passion for the club, for example, multiple players or coaches (both current and former) tick many of the below:

    1. Long service to the club: Playing 95-100% of their careers for Easts. If they want another year should the club give it to them. Or are we okay with them playing less minutes to prolong their careers even if it affects the salary cap, team balance or means we can't re-sign others? For example JWH, Mini, Ricko or Aubo. Could you imagine them in any other colours?

    2. Staying for less: Should we be okay with a slight drop in form or long term injuries? For example Toops, Manu, Mini. These players have taken less even though they could have earnt more elsewhere. Again could you imagine them.playing for another club?

    3. Local juniors/sons of legends: Rads like Ricko before him was a local junior and also played lock. Both are/were tough and put their bodies on the line. Both guilty of the odd brain snap. Let's not forget how costly it was not having Ricko in the 04 GF. Or young Lam or Jacko Hastings as the sons of club legends. Should we be more patient with their shortcomings?

    4. Fans growing up: Even though they weren't locals players, LOD, Flash Gordan and more recently Coops, Teddy and Sammy Walker, have openly said they were roosters fans growing up and dreamt of playing for the RWB. Like us they obviously love and are passionate about the club. Should these true fans that go onto become players be given a longer rope?

    5. Multiple premiership winners: Should players/coaches who have had proven success and are capable of future success be persisted with? For example Keary, Rads, Toops, Manu, JWH, Teddy, Robbo or cut loose once their best is behind them?

    6. Genuine Champions: Do we allow them to decide when or how long they play for and cop it if they don't deliver up to our chookpen standards? For example Freddy, Teddy, Cronk, SBW, Robbo:

    7. Potential of future stars: JS obviously comes to mind. But is it worth being loyal to.players who could walk away at anytime such like RTS and Fatrell.

    8. Leaders: If they are current, past or future leaders do they warrant extra support? For example Cords, Friend or Freddy in playing or coaching positions

My question is, for players and coaches that meet some of the above do we, the chookpen, need to cut them some slack or give them a longer rope than we would the average player/coach when they impact the club negatively? Or do we treat every player/coach the same and stop showing them love if they are not delivering?

You ask a lot of questions, that I don't think I can answer. But your passion for the Roosters is obvious and good on you mate. I think you'll get some answers.

I think there are plenty of options in between t throwing them to the wolves and cutting them some slack.
Certainly past performances, and loyalty deserve to be considered before bagging someone.
but they don't get you two points
Nobody is perfect, all I want for the team is to be properly prepared and do everything they can to better the team, that comes down to hard work and dedication.
In the current team Teddy, Toops, Billy Smith, Keary, JWH, Collins, get cut some slack for a combination of past performances, and hard work.
The rest are free to be praised or bagged on a weekly basis,

i'm of the school that it's the role of fans to support the team. as long as players try their best i'm not going to bag them. it's the job of the players, coaching staff and back room boys to pursue excellence; it's the role of fans to support the team.
no doubt fans are an important part of the set up but it's the players and club that does the business.
of course intelligently criticising players etc is okay but that's different from bagging them

I guess I can give you my thoughts of who should be under some criticism and who shouldn't based solely off my own viewing and opinion for what its worth. We will count this season and maybe a bit of recent history.

Champions: Teddy, Tupou, Manu, Collins, JWH.

Safe: Billy Smith, Walker, Sitili, N Butch

Jury is Out: Cheese, Angus, E Butch, Watson, Whyte, Paulo, Lodge,

            Underwhelming: Keary, Paulo, Radley

            Poor: Sue R. Lehe, Hutch

            Farrrk Off: Corey Allan

            I may be missing some.

In the course of my job I've met and dealt with a lot of NRL players, and especially roosters. (Yes bring on the hate for big noting myself, LOL)

Recently one of the rego division locks and I got talking. This thread made me think of it because he said there were "favourites" that received preferential treatment. When I asked who for example, he came up with JWH of all people! I did politely suggest that maybe he's earned it.

The guy was only 20. I guess that's not atypical of young uns these days. Little or no respect for their elders.

Who was this kid and do we still want him at our club? Honestly, JWH deserves any favouritism he gets. He is 10+ years older than some of the blokes yet still rips and tears.

You could name an 18 player squad of players and Coach that have been constantly bagged as you call it on here.

I am sure a few folk on here would gladly give some of the players and coaching staff enough rope but not a longer rope

Not sure what the point really is in trashing players and or the coaching staff though.

What does it mean and what purpose does it really serve in the long run ? None that I can see

Do folk get their jollies off when they do this though?

Do passionate fans want players and coaches sacked, or is this more the terrain of disgruntled fans?

To answer your Baldrick Type question

Thick and Thin is the phrase to use in supporting a team in any sport.

You need to acknowledge that they won't win every game and or the comp every year and players for instance are human and not robots so they will not be at their best over 80 minutes each and every week.

You are in it for the long haul.

Opinions, as this is purely what they are, are okay if reasonably and respectfully expressed.

It's the ones on here that solely play the man that are very problematic and it's getting worse since the influx of newbies doing the same. i.e the incessant personal attacks on the Hutchinator , Butcher Brothers and Coach Robinson.

The old " If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all." comes to mind

I think this is close to right. I’d add Turpin to the safe list, but move Nat Butch to the underwhelming list.

I wouldn’t compare Ricko to Radley. Ricko was super-reliable and delivered year in, year out for his whole career. I’m not sure about Ricko’s brain snaps that you speak of; my memory is that he was a smart footy player whereas Radley regularly plays dumb. He stood up for his captain once and payed the penalty. How often has Radley been on the sidelines?

If you look at how Ricko's played in defence, he was actually very similar to Radley. The difference was in the way the game was officiated and the rules then compared to now. One can make the argument that Rads needs to play by the rules, but on the flip side to that the arguement I have is, was the rules better than or now? I know that as a product the game was fine until PvL got his nose into the rule book
