  • Billy Smith Signed for 2024 - SMH

In a double dose of potential good news for the Roosters, centre Billy Smith confirmed he would remain at Bondi for at least one more season.

Smith has been a standout since his return from an ACL injury – his third serious knee blow – but told this masthead the club had signed him for the 2023 season.

The former schoolboy rugby prodigy wants to build on his form, hopefully with Keary cleared to join him on the right edge.

“He’s so important to us, he’s not only a great player but a leader at our club, so fingers crossed it’s good news for him [with the scans],” Smith said on Monday morning.
“I looked at his face after the game and it was pretty swollen. If he’s out, it will be next man up.

“I debuted next to ‘Kez’, I’ve always loved playing outside him, and whenever he gets his hands on the ball, I push up outside him because he can create anything. I’m looking forward to building on that momentum.”

As for nailing down another one-year extension, Smith said: “They locked me in just before I came back [in May]. It’s just for next year. The club have been awesome to me.

“For them to say we want you for another year, before playing a game of footy, was pretty crazy for me.

“I didn’t expect it, but it goes to show the love and loyalty they have, and I’ll look to repay that faith over the next 18 months.

“I’ve always backed myself as a player, but I’m not where I want to be as a player – I want to find that good consistent form, and that comes with time.”

The Roosters’ win in the Hunter puts them just outside the top eight on points differential, but their cavalry continue to return.

Victor Radley is back from suspension for the Raiders clash, while Joseph Suaalii, who was a late scratching from media commitments on Monday, returns the following week from his own three-match ban.

First thing that stood out to me aswell... like when they always use the words "NRL star" when something off field happens.

Regardless, good for him to re-sign. Hasn't set the world alight but he's stringing games together at least.

I'm happy for Billy to earn another year. If this guy stays fit there is no reason he should not continue to improve.

I like Billy, but at times he seems more interested in fixing up his hair then making a tackle

To be fair, his first few games back he was looking very good. His last few have definitely been less so.

He reminds me of an early SKD in the way he handles the ball. Very very error prone but the skill is clearly there.

SKD is an all time roosters top try scorer. Smith hasn’t scored a try in his last 12 games

He’s filling a hole for us. The current alternatives may be far worse.

Other than loyalty I see this as a dumb thing .

I'm happy with it. He definitely has some talent, and has done some good things. He was the only player that could hold his head high at the end of that Cowboys debacle.

He definitely has defensive issues and is error-prone, though. If he fixes those up, he'll do well. Have to remember how horrendous Collins was with his handling early in his career, too.

I'd love to see Billy achieve his potential. Been through plenty of massive setbacks, and it's a credit to both him and the club that he is back on the field in first grade.
He has been struggling to hit form this season, but I think there is plenty of upside if he gets through this year and a full pre season next year.
He's 24 in November, he could still be a star.

Huh? What does that have to do with anything? Are you too young to remember SKD’s early days and how error prone he was? Billy smith handles the ball very similarly in that one hand grip.

Early days? Don't forget the middle and the end too! Love SKD but the man had an error or two in him.
