  • A key to a good Pearce performance.

    Is his support play.

In all his good performances this year Mitchell has been supporting extremely well. Having a week off I've couch crashed and watched our games again and even City V Country, and the one thing I've noticed is in nearly every half of full line break Pearcy has been there in the frame. He is really going after the ball as all good halfbacks should.

Can you measure support play? I reckon it'd be a good stat for Pearce.

    Chook.

There's a vast difference between the city team and our team.

He still had to carry the 5/8

I agree. I think his support play is a good indicator of his enthusiasm.

I think support play and the kick-chase are two very good indicators for how much effort a team is putting in, in general.

Don't underestimate his willingness to defend too. He never takes a backward step in defence, even when some monstrous forward is rampaging towards him. He ain't no Jamie Soward, hiding under a parasol near the touch judge.

Willingness and ability are two different stories.

Not in regards to defence which is 100% attitude ie willingness, that I believe is what Spirit was alluding too.

              Chook.

So you are saying he doesn't have the ability to defend?

Find me a better defending half back in the NRL. The only other one who would be up there is Ben Hornby.

He made a great tackle in the first half of the City v Country match. The ball runner lost the ball and all of his team mates raced over to show their appreciation.

You obviously fail to see these sorts of things.

its his running game, when he runs and takes the line on then he usually has a good game.

I can't agree. Friend has the right attitude and willingness but he is mostly dominated. Pearce is stronger but it is not the reason he is in the team. Yes he defends well but is not able to stop the big men near the line.

Yes, he smashed Ben Creagh, front on, one-on-one. He actually stopped Creagh a few times, once very close to the line. He defends well, which is why many of his critics think he might make a good hooker.

His only issue, consistency aside, is his decision making. He is still learning when to take on the line, and is a little kick happy. Unfortunately, his development has been slower than expected, but he slowly maturing into a very good half.

Well, if you are talking about a smaller man trying to stop a bigger man close to the line, that is neither willingness nor ability. It is Newtonian physics.

As Scotty from Star Trek would say: "Ya canna change the laws of physics, Jim!"
