I expect us to make the top 8 every year as a minimum! I don't believe that that is too much to ask! I expect to go into every season with some level of optimism that we are a "chance" to win the comp. I am a person who likes to raise the bar. I don't believe that that is too much to ask either!

Trust me when i say that i knew at the start of this season that we were absolutely no chance in hell of winning the comp this year. I also knew after watching the first 77 minutes of rubbish in round 1 that we have next to no chance in hell of making the top 8. This too me is just not good enough!! Unfortunately from what i can gather from you and your mates on here that it is perfectly acceptable with the whole "rebuilding excuse" to justify it. For you to say, "we will finish somewhere from 9-12 or thereabouts and we MAY sneak into the 8 if things go our way such as injuries or luck (both for us and the other teams)", i find it very very sad that you have to think like that, and your sheep mates on here just blindly go along thinking that this is a good thing and simply accept it. Its rather depressing that you find it acceptable to have the bar set so low. Our destiny should be in our hands, not having the need to resort to wishing for luck and how injuries and luck go for other teams! That really is quite pathetic!

I certainly do not see Smithy and Retarded Son (which is actually the title written on the plaque on the front door of their office) as the man to lead us to the finals, let alone any finals success! Carney and to a lesser extent Myles were the reason why we made the 2010 grandfinal. Carney and Myles were poorly managed at our club by Smithy and R.S, how can they be such "cancers" when you look how well they are both going this year!! Both are going to be playing State of Origin, and Carney is doing for Cronulla what he did for us in 2010, completely changing a club from the $hithouse to the penthouse! Myles is going great guns at the Tits! I have no doubt that if Smithy and R.S weren't coaching us then both would still be at our club and we would be premiership contenders!!

With the side we have this year, minus of course Carney and Myles, if we had Craig Bellamy coaching us, i have no doubt at all that we would make the top 8 this year. There is certainly enough talent in this side to work with to achieve at least that!! Do you or any of the sheep think that there is not enough talent in our side to make the 8?
We do have one of the younger rosters in the NRL, "BUT" we have players in our side who are young like Pearce, Friend, SKD, Aubs, Mortimer that have played plenty of 1st grade, along with JWH, BJ and Guerra have quite a bit experience under their belts now with of course Mini, Anasta and FPN. Really how much friggin experience do you and sheep think you need 200, 300 1st grade games before you can stop the "rebuilding phase excuse" for lack of success? We might be waiting sometime then!!
I love your passion Oracle. Don't get me wrong I want the team to win every time we play. Of course I do. But I'm a realist and I believe there are many teams that have a far better roster than ours. Also I make the following points about the team.

We have a young enthusiastic forward pack who still have a lot to learn.
We have a halfback who hopefully is only just starting to mature? Can he keep it up?
We have one of the weakest backlines in the comp.
We have two aging players who are past their prime in the key positions of 1 and 6.

All this translates to me as a finish somewhere just out of the 8.
We will just have to agree to disagree. And please don't question my love of the team or call my support pathetic. I love the team as much as any chooks supporter.

If we maintain 50% winning rate we will finish 8th.

I am certain of it too... The Sam Burgess deal is a joke.. He is supposedly on around $250K a season on his official contract.. His manager told the Tigers and Roosters that unless the initial offer was over $400K a year he wouldn't even bother talking.

Why is it you have intimate knowledge of contractual negotiations to share publicly?

For the record, we have only two players in the entire starting pack and extended bench that have played more than 50 first grade games. This is generally considered the minimum experience required for a player to begin playing good consistent football in 1st grade. Yes, there will always be exceptions, but these are exactly that, exceptions rather than the rule. To expect our side to perform consistently this year is, IMO, is to expect too much.

Smith was brought in to rebuild this side from the ground up. A decision was made to employ a youth policy, and Smith was brought in to develop this side over time. That's why he was signed for 4 years.... because a realistic expectation is that that is how long it takes. Todd Carney, and some exciting (& fortunate) circumstances conspired to get us into a Grand Final in the first year of Smiths tenure. This completely distorted many peoples expectations of what was to come, including mine at the time. The return to earth has been harsh, and it is obvious that many have struggled to come to terms with this.

Lastly, there a 16 teams in this competition, and I'm sure every supporter of every one of those 16 teams wants to make the 8 each year.... but it simply can't happen, especially in a Salary Cap ruled system, where success is punished and long-term dominance is increasingly difficult. Success will only come in waves under this system, but I firmly believe are currenlty on the way up. Better times are ahead. Be patient.

                      Well done.

A measured, realistic and humanistic post.

There was a deleted thread (hijacked by agenda pushers), in which the "if you're willing to tolerate mediocrity, then good for you" line was pulled by Bansai. Spirit of 66, another poster (like Bansai) who has been on the old wall since 2000 and seen it all, replied that he didn't like mediocrity, but there was enough of it in his life that he found it bearable to follow a mediocre team, as ours is at the moment. He also suggested that as Bansai was probably driving home from the game in his maserati with Miranda Kerr by his side, that he would find losing more difficult.

A pity that thread was deleted because that was a great post by Spirit. It is a reality check. Spirit and I sat in the chookpen on Anzac Day and endured watching our beloved team lose an unloseable game in the last 5 minutes. Not so long ago we hugged and jumped crazily about the SFS as we watched SKD run 70 metres to win THAT semi against the tigers. We saw the faces of the tigers supporters that looked just like ours at the end of that game on Anzac Day this year.

There are ups and downs. Learning to lose in life is just as important as doing your best to win.

We get all these good teams during the origin period and we will only be missing Pearcey. If we play it right we can start a run toward the finals and from there anything can happen.

For what it's worth I am very nervous about tomorrows game. I think I would rather have had Buderus and Gidley in to make sure the kids turn up ready to rumble.

I have seen too many of these type of games go wrong to feel good about the players Newcastle are missing.
