    Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) Chairman Peter V’landys AM today paid tribute to legendary medical figure Dr Merv Cross OAM.

    Dr Cross was a former NRL board member, as well as a renowned orthopaedic surgeon.

    “Dr Merv Cross was an extraordinary figure who changed lives over the course of a long career as an orthopaedic surgeon, and as one of the preeminent experts in the field,” Mr V’landys said.

    “Dr Cross was also on the National Rugby League board, giving of his insight and expertise.

    “He was a renowned figure in the game having also played 45 first-grade games in the 1960s for South Sydney, Eastern Suburbs and North Sydney.

    “He was able to change the fortunes of so many athletes, including Rugby League players, through his amazing expertise as a knee surgeon.

    “My thoughts are with his family and all those who have benefited from his extraordinary feats. The game of Rugby League owes Dr Cross a huge debt.”

    He trained the guy who reconstructed my ankle which was described by my surgeon as the most broken ankle he'd ever seen.

        Dr Cross conducted one of my knee surgeries total professional and at the forefront of surgical techniques.

          Vale Dr Cross. There was a period of many years when he seemed to do every major knee reconstruction in the comp, back in the days when they were a relatively new thing. Apart from playing for us, was he also our club doctor for a time?

            I remember Merv Cross playing for the Roosters during the '60s. a pretty handy outside back if my memory serves me correctly. RIP a great surgeon.
