  • Manu to be named

The Sydney Roosters are set to name Joey Manu for Friday night’s do-or-die showdown against South Sydney after scans cleared the star centre of serious injury.

In a potentially huge boost for the Roosters, Manu is rated a 50-50 chance of playing in the grudge match at Accor Stadium that could decide the final spot in the eight.

Manu on Sunday morning had scans on the hamstring injury that limited him to just 23 minutes against the Tigers on Saturday, with results showing a minor low-grade strain.

It was feared his season might be over, but the club is now optimistic the strike centre is a chance of backing up.

A six-day turnaround adds to the difficulty of the assignment for Manu. However, with the club’s season on the line, the Roosters are preparing to run the gauntlet.

Manu missed the club’s elimination final against South Sydney last year with a calf injury he suffered the previous week, also against the Rabbitohs at the opening of Allianz Stadium.

With prop Jared Waerea-Hargreaves to miss the game through suspension, the Roosters will be buoyed further by the return of skipper James Tedesco, who was forced to sit out the match against the Tigers under the NRL’s mandatory 11-day concussion protocols.

The big question will be whether the Tricolours roll the dice with Manu. They were faced with a similar conundrum in last year’s elimination final against South Sydney with Daniel Tupou.

The Roosters opted to play the winger despite going into the game with a groin injury and he failed to finish the match.

The Roosters will have a contingency plan in place if Manu plays this Friday. It’s likely boom rookie Siua Wong, who covered in the centres when Manu left the field against the Tigers, will be on standby.

The Roosters will have the added bonus of having Angus Crichton, who was a late withdrawal on Saturday, back in action for the clash against his old club.

Haha, these reporters are second rate.

Wong will be on standby? Um no , Allen will play centre if Manu can’t back up.

Yes he will. He’s not flashy but he will get the job done if required.

I think there is no chance he plays. Even a minor hamstring strain will still cause issues after 6 days rest. It's unfortunate, but the team will just need to cover for him. Let's hope to God Hutch or Suaalii aren't named in the centres!

I think they meant that if he goes down in the game, they would shift Wong out there who played admirably. I tend to agree..lets roll the dice if he is at least 70-80% fit.

If Robbo puts Suaalii or Hutch at centre I’d be stunned into a coma.

I hope he doesn’t play. He would have to coast not to re-aggravate it and that won’t happen against the bunnies. Give Allan another run, get the W and hopefully he will be 100% for finals week 1. If he plays and aggravates it during the game, it will punish us against the bunnies and he will be gone for the season even if we do jag a finals spot.

The Hutchinator must be a shot at centre - deceptive pace and strong D could well be an asset against a fired up Souths side

if Robbo named Allan in Manu's RCentre position for the Tigers match, it stands to reason he will again this week. He was solid there on sat night, before having to shift around. Can't see Manu playing this week even with a minor hammy strain .... even a minor strain can take some weeks to get over.

Can't see us making the same mistake as last year by playing Manu injured.

I agree. It’s unrealistic that Manu will recover from a hamstring injury in 6 days. Surely we won’t make that mistake again.
