I wish Smith would show the boys this video so maybe they'd wake up.

When I watched that, I couldn't help thinking of that book about Vietnam - We Were Soldiers Once… And Young.

        Back when we were...I don't know...powerful.

Everything now revolves around set plays, taking the ball up methodically, completing your set and getting the kick in. This style of coaching is now the dominant form and this is why, IMHO, the game is more boring these days. I love watching the old games on Foxtel from the 90's when the players played with more skill, flair and vision. Smith is from this era and still tries to coach this way. We have a young team and so they still tend to take the wrong option more often than not and their skill levels are still developing. Once they gain more experience we will start to see improvements in our attack.
That's a great post IMO MR. I will give Smiff his due, while I don't agree 100% with all his methods, he does it his way and fears no reprisals. That's all that can be asked of a head coach, IMO, do their best within the framework of the club, resources, talent etc, to get everyone moving forward in one direction.

I believe the club, and Smiffs a major part of this, are beginning to harden up and take us in a new direction not trying to always keep up with others, but trying to go out there and do it our way, hence the obvious youth thingy.

Hopefully the payoff is lasting, with or without Smiffy in charge.

          You know it makes sense.

This. Bellamy's family don't even live with him in Melbourne because his wife said there is no point. He is obsessed with coaching and watching footage 24 hours a day, which is not healthy. I also love the old games from the 80's and 90's as players threw the ball around with no fear, unlike today's wrestling. I'm glad it's not just me who thinks this way. Sometimes, as much as I'm grateful I can now see games on GEM down here, I get bored because I have the attention span of a fruit bat.

Gee, I can't see why his missus wouldn't want to stay there with him

The man spits when he talks. That's why! If he does become our coach, I expect a spray jacket in every membership pack.

I'd forgotten what it was like to have fast wingers.

What about Robert Miles, when he was with the Roosters he was going places and then he left and went to the Tigpies and faded into obscurity.

The game was faster, more skillful and generally more exciting back in those days, none of the boring wrestling, grapple, chicken wing, crusher, one out dummy half stuff.
