Can't believe Robbo is going to give Gus a gig over Whyte, one bloke has punched out big numbers all year and improved whilst the other has done nothing and has been a weak link, it's a poor selection based on past reputation in my book.
This is exactly why the criticism of Robbo on this forum and outside has been warranted. A perfect example of player favouritism when there is no shadow of a doubt Whyte has outplayed him and deserves his place.
These stats are somewhat misleading. I think you’ll find that “6 agains” are not in these numbers, which were mostly penalties against us prior to their introduction. Add those in and I reckon the numbers will blow away the premiership years by some margin. Our discipline is woeful and should be addressed as a matter of urgency by the coach as our team is no longer good enough to win a premiership with such poor discipline.

Where’s the line between favouritism and backing a player who’s done the job for you before and how do you distinguish between the two to discern that in this case it is favouritism?

What job has he done R6? I can't seem to recall Angus standing out in any crunch match to be frank. Bar the odd game here or there. his form over the last couple YEARS has been dismal. Like absolutely SHYTE and anyone that thinks other wise is kidding themselves. I will go as far to say that his selection in rep teams is based on reputation than anything else.
I will put him up there with that Carlaw fella - looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane.
there's a case for picking whyte, and who knows - maybe he runs out on friday, but picking a current australian player isn't controversial. friday will have finals intensity and gus has been there and done it

I’ve been one of Crichton’s harshest critics over the years but I genuinely thought he was great in the 2nd row last year and was finally starting to understand the positional requirements of the position and how he fit into that. He’s also been surprisingly good at rep level as a middle forward off the bench, it’s a role for a long time I thought was his best position as he had played quite well for us there too when Robinson played him in the middle.
None of that really answers my original question though, what makes it favouritism vs philosophy. There are a lot of coaches in a lot of sports around the world who would pick the player who’s been there and done it before regardless of form.
I would pick Whyte, but I also give Robinson more credit than to believe it’s just a favouritism thing because you can track it throughout his whole career where he has consistently picked players he’s seen do it before over players who are in better form.

I think Whyte has a high ceiling/ potential but most coaches would pick a player with 20+ representative matches and over 150 FG games in a do or die match against souths over a talented 21yr old with 11 FG experience.

Not to mention that Whyte is probably still building match fitness, as he has just returned from his own knee injury. I'm not sure how much game time he has got in Reggies since he came back, but he may still be a little under done. Chrichton is known to be a very fit player, and may simply be the one best placed to play.
