May wasn't on the verge of playing firsts for the Riff. He completely gave up on footy (after failing to make it in the NRL), put on ~30kg (a looot for a guy his height!) and was sitting on the couch playing video games all day for about a year while working odd jobs.

With some encouragement from his brothers, he signed a train and trial with us and was expected to be a relatively meh depth player for the Bears. After absolutely killing it for the Bears in the first 10 rounds, Robbo debuted him. He's not 'home grown' but we did bank on an overweight reserve grader (who's only ~183cm so not a typical 'alpha front rower') and we gave him his breakthrough.

He owes us nothing as this was on his own merits (during a TOUGH season, which he played a big role in turning around for us) but I think this has formed a solid relationship that both sides would factor into negotiations.

They're like the kid who just got his pocket money and it's burning a hole in his pocket. They just go out and buy the first shiny new thing they see even though they already have something similar sitting in the cupboard at home

He's being advised by Gus, isn't he?

I personally wouldn't wanna be in a situation where that loudmouth's running the show and trying to puppet me through everything. Though I rate his footy IQ (he was good at setting us up and setting Penrith up to the point where both teams had generational success once he p!ssed off and let his successor do their job without interference), he's the kinda know-it-all / interferer that I'd hate to have around. I'd constantly be like 'mate do you wanna coach or not?!?!? Not? Well then STFU and let me do my job then!!!'

Not really concerned with losing May for 2025 by that time Xavier Va'a will be ready

What's worse than a condescending flog is a condescending flog that doesn't know what they're talking about. "Your take" on May is laughable. He was released by Penrith in early 2020 without so much of a sniff of first grade after playing a handful of Cup games.

Even signed with Wests, couldn't get a run in their ressies side, played for Blacktown Workers (Manly feeder), didn't get a full time contract with Manly so nearly quit footy before we signed him on a train and trial that didn't even guarantee him a spot in the Norths team.

"On the verge of breaking into the Penrith team" is a laughable comment from the resident cretin. Get better.

WanKerr’s only on here to disagree and bag everyone. I’m guessing he/she/it suffers from small man syndrome, lives with parents, has a very mundane and low paying job that requires no skill or brains, has no friends and couldn’t get laid in a brothel with a fist full of hundreds.

I'm yet to see what all the hype is about with Va'a

I know he has had injuries but every Cup game I watched he was underwhelming

Give him a bit of time, not many props develop as fast as Haas.

IMO like ex-girlfriends... you never 'lose' what you never really had. If they're more interested in a 6'5, heavily jacked African heart surgeon then you've just gotta wish them well and hope his gentlemanly behaviour extends to using a liberal amount of WD-40 on that squeaky back door (or not - wot me worry).

                    If a player's either...

                    - offered a fark load of money that we've got reserved for marquee players / leaders (who might already be taking unders so that ends meet); or

                    - wants to play elsewhere to be with family / a favourite coach / a club they supported as a kid...etc,

then there's absolutely nothing you can do. Players are allowed to choose other clubs. If they don't wanna be here then there's no point trying to force them.

I think we've earned some social capital with May and he's busted his chops to not only make 1st grade, but to have some of the best stats to his name. IMO all of our forwards would know there's big money on offer once JWH retires. That can't be their only motivation though (and it certainly hasn't been JWH's only motivation we want people who bleed RWB - not useless coffee dates with people who'll always think they can do better than us).

Well that'll be just great...wave May goodbye when we don't even have enough real props now.
                      Got 4,578 second rowers though.
Should let one of them go and keep May.

That story that Andrew Walker is telling about you & Paddo in the off topic section is classical.

It's called the natural high of running (just did a mad 30km PB at a local running festival) and not taking yourself too seriously.

Hope you enjoy my contributions to old mate's thread.

about 6 weeks the media reported that Smith and Mey were both re-signing ?
