My uneducated guess is that it was a pre-emptive strike admitting what was said from the Broncos side, knowing that Easts Counsel may likely raise it. They obviously didn't want it public as we never made a 'complaint' and it would spoil the fairytale narrative.

I would say it was some crap about lost relatives/friends from suicide and it brought up issues of self-harm thoughts to himself.

Some irony in that, on the one hand and I guess out if respect and decency, no-one would ever think about doubting Mam on one single thing that he said, including how upset he was as a result of the incident. We take his word on it. It's hammered into us that you white people don't know what it's like to be on the end of this stuff. Fair enough.

Then on the other hand, we have an NRL prosecutor straight out calling Leniu a liar, and bringing up incidents like Hrbajan Singh/Andrew Symonds (happened before Lenui was born) and Adam Goodes (happened when he's just moved here from Samoa and was 13) in his attempt to justify calling Leniu a liar.

Leniu is also a black man. Don't we then also have to then accept that we don't fully understand his circumstances and his beliefs either, just like we don't for Mam?

And so we therefore must respectfully believe Leniu as well?

They could and should have given some understanding, give him 8 weeks if you farkin must, but let him walk out not being branded a liar. Could have said we take on board your explanation Spencer and the Court accepts your understanding as explained. We do however need to blbl blah blah, and you get 8 weeks

It's a bit sad to see. Thurston on the free to air outrage bandwagon as, whilst he was a fantastic player, as he a footy commentator he is beyond average, and only employed because Channel 9 think Quennslanders will only watch on Friday nights if all the commentators are former Qld origin stars. Maybe they're right. I lived there for a few years and they are parochial way beyond normal thinking.

The NRL needs to be careful here not to alienate the Pacific Island community I have a friend from Tonga with sons and other relatives who play first grade and in the lower grades of the Panthers and he has spoken about the "what about us?" feeling from players of Pacific Island culture who feel targetted by the NRL, media and that racism towards their players is accepted. He asked me today if someone would get suspended for 8 weeks if they called a Pacific Island player a coconut and I have to agree with him that they wouldn't.
