You might wish he'd come out *swinging* with sworn legal document in hand and claimed "provocation"...or told all now, before his 'trial', and claimed provocation.
It won’t matter what the provocation was unless it was racially motivated.

    • Daily Telegraph now reporting that Spencer was racially abused first. The plot thickens.

Broncos player accused of directing derogatory slur at Spencer Leniu; Buzz Rothfield Saint, Sinner, Shoosh | CODE Sports

A Broncos player is alleged to have made a derogatory remark to Roosters prop Spencer Leniu that led to his racial slur at Ezra Mam.

Leniu chose not to go public with details of what was said that triggered his brain explosion.

The ex-Panthers star stands by his apology and even offered to jump on a plane to Brisbane on Wednesday to say sorry to Mam face-to-face.

Maybe it will come up at his judiciary hearing on Monday night, but one of his closest associates told me: “He was brought up in Mount Druitt where you don’t snitch.”

The incident has caused widespread fallouts across the game.

First, Wayne Bennett labelled those critical of what happened as “drama queens”.

            What a pathetic comment.

Even Anthony Mundine chimed in, telling Mam to “toughen up”.

            That’s poor form, Choc.

We don’t imagine these comments will sit well with proud Indigenous men like Latrell Mitchell and Nicho Hynes, who have been so vocal in their disapproval of Leniu’s behaviour.

Especially for Mitchell who regarded Bennett as a father-like figure in their time at Souths.

500 dollar fine and smack on the hand for Spencer or the NRL look like even bigger dickheads than they already do.

              It might matter.
Just standing there silent and offering no excuse, letting himself get *whacked*, will be a very bad thing to do.
Seemingly fuming, and seemingly being dictated to by the '12 weeks' brigade, they seem to be ready to make him pay big time.
He needs to put forward an excuse, something to make the jury realise that there was something else at play other than racism on his part.
That he was insulted by a slur first and that his mind 'exploded' with offence then uttered the slur from his mouth, a reflex reaction, not fully realising the hurt it would cause.

To take a cheap shot, Buzz chooses to pick "drama queens" out of all Wayne Bennett said about it, including "We've all said things we later regretted saying, including those most calling for blood" Which is spot on.

If something was said that Spencer retaliated to that Spencer will not now even bring up, even when it could help him when he's facing weeks on the sideline, he and the club earn respect.

We don't lay down for penalties, we don't snitch.

I remember the backlash against Glenn Morrison when he ratted on Ryan Cross way back in 2005.

I remember that too. Was that for biting or eye gouging or something like that?

He rubbed his eye. Morrison made out like he'd ripped it out of its socket.

What would someone get for eye gouging now? What did Gallen get for ripping the stitches out of that Tigers player's head?

Googled it. Anthony Laffranchi was the victim, played 205 first grade games 103 for Tigers and 102 for Titans. I remember him as a consistently good Tigers player for multiple seasons, surprised to read he played 4 origins and 5 matches for Australia. Anyway, he had suffered a head knock that required stitches and bandaging.

                          Gallen's grubby past

Cronulla Sharks captain Paul Gallen still has blood on his hands, so it's offensive he can continue to point dirty fingers at others.

Before reviewing why Gallen decided to accuse 20-year-old Raiders back-rower Josh Papalii of a ''dog shot'' after last Sunday's semi-final loss in Canberra, maybe Gallen needs a reminder of his own colourful past.

Let's go back to 2008, when Gallen was a 26-year-old and already a New South Wales Origin representative. He was obviously a senior player by then, already captain of the Sharks too, before it was taken from him in 2009 because of the arrival of the more clean-cut Trent Barrett.

On March 29, 2008, television cameras captured Gallen deliberately sticking his fingers beneath the head-bandaging of Gold Coast Titans forward Anthony Laffranchi.

Laffranchi had received a head cut earlier in the match but, as the tough sport often requires, he had returned to the battlefield with stitching and bandages protecting the gash.

To a shark like Gallen, that was blood in the water. He gouged at the bandages like a kid sticking his fingers into a peanut-butter jar, re-opening the cut and forcing Laffranchi to leave the field again because of the blood-bin rule.

The NRL judiciary slapped Gallen on the wrist with a three-week ban.

Some media commentators had called for him to be jailed for common assault.

He got 3 weeks. God knows what his previous record was too. Given the intent and pre-meditation, and knowingly trying to add to an earlier injury in a sickening way that is offensive to any human.

Sadly it will be the society of the day the sees a first offender get a longer sentence than that, for a non violent incident and for saying one word, which he has owned up to, and apologised for.

Sure you can do that, which lots of players and clubs do, you might get the odd penalty or whatever. Great. But you've shown your true character, by laying down when you're not hurt.

You can't take that back. Better to retain your integrity than be like a soccer player.

Would you really rather players at the club you support lay down and fake injuries, just to scrounge the occasional penalty?

I liked your post but laying down for penalties is sadly now part of the game and we are unfortunately falling behind in this department.

I don’t agree with it but sitting up on our high horse only gives us further to fall.

                              • A couple of problems with Buzz's article.
Who made this allegation about a Broncos player making a derogatory remark?
                                Is there any audio proof?
Is a witness prepared to come forward because there is no way a Broncos player will put his hand up?

It would be interesting if it came out as Mam saying it.
