  • Roosters haven’t fielded a full-strength team since 2019 grand final - Article

    https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sp...42089edccb16a9

The Sydney Roosters have been unable to field their best side for nearly five years, prompting coach Trent Robinson to describe his club’s astonishing injury and suspension sequence as “wild.”

They won’t seek reasons for not having won a grand final over the past four years but here’s a doozy of an excuse.

Fox Sports Lab has revealed the last time Sydney Roosters actually played with a full strength side was the 2019 grand final.

Over the next four seasons and four rounds, the Roosters have been without top-line players for 466 games through injury and suspension.

Despite this, the Roosters have finished in week two of the finals three times and week one once during that time.

Who knows whether Penrith would have experienced such grand final dominance had the Roosters been at full tilt?

And the Roosters won’t be back to their best until at least round ten, when prop Spencer Leniu return from suspension.

Fox Sports Lab compiled the best players from each season before revealing the number of games each has missed.

No other club in the NRL has endured such a horrific long-term injury run.

Robinson was stunned when told, saying: “Look, I didn’t know that but that’s what it’s felt like at different times.

“It’s been wild at different times, the guys that have been in and out over the last few years. We have twice had two ACL’s in the one game. We’ve had punctured lungs, concussions. We’ve had suspensions.

“I have felt really proud with how the guys have adapted, a lot of the time.

“It would be nice to get a run where we get 1 to 17 week on week and we’d like to keep players on the field more.

“We want to get our team on the field and perform better than what we’ve done in the last few years. We’ve had our reasons and it felt like we could have been better.

“We think if we can get our best players on the field then we can play well this year.”

Aside from Leniu, Roosters prop Lindsay Collins has a hamstring injury and remains in doubt for a game against Canterbury this Friday night at Accor Stadium.

Robinson said injuries weren’t always about “bad luck.”

“Whether it’s been through injury or suspension, we’ve got a role to play in that,” he said

“I don’t think they are just accidents, I don’t think all injuries are just by chance. The way that you prepare players, the way they prepare themselves, if you just say it’s not our fault then you can’t do anything about it.

“Whereas I feel you’ve got to take some responsibility and try to improve the way you’re doing things.

“We all know some things do happen and we can’t control them but if you just say you can’t control any of them then you’re not going to improve the way that you train or prepare.”

I’ll always say this,if we had a similar injury run to the Panthers over the last 4 years things would’ve definetly been different..

Unfortunately the football Gods have wanted otherwise!

2020 and 2021 definitely ones that got away. Fourpete a moral with no injuries.

I've been asking for this stats for a while now. It's crazy in that I can't remember the last time we had the same team run out on the field for two weeks in a row. It's getting voodoo-esque.

          2021

They left out the Hutchinator who suffered the busted ribs and punctured lung vs Parra - Browns Knees - Missed 6 games - somehow missed by the Bunker

I posted such stats before to counter the misconception that the Roosters had the best squad - hard to say that when you see how many games players are missing which really tests your depth.

Coach Robinson and staff have done a great job to get the Roosters into a position to make the finals these past 4 years

              Geez that's a horrendous stat.

I'd like to know the numbers for all the other teams.

Are we 466 compared to another team's 465, or is there a wide gap between Easts and the next team on the list?
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.

Good response by Robbo. He’s a smart cookie, no doubt.

Wow! Great insight. The Roosters have been still managed to be in the mix with so many first XVII troops being down... 1-17 available for all seasons (or most of it at least) different nrl landscape. Testament to the Club's spirit. Like the saying goes, if it was easy... now go take it out on the Doggies this week!

Good to see Spencer's almost 1/2 way through his ridiculous suspension. Coulda used him last week with Collins out!!!

Hope Brisbane and Souffs miss the 8 for that one and Spencer laughs the loudest when we put cricket scores on 'em.

Unbelievable that Radley has missed 36 games in the last four seasons.

Crazy stats. I think 2020 and 2021 are definitely the most painful, especially the BMoz and Cords injuries. Then the Keary injury in 2021 basically ended his career, hasn't been the same since.

I remember start of 2020 and 2021 we absolutely blitzed the opening rounds and everything was on song until some of those injuries.

Who could forget the 40pt win against Newcastle that ended BMoz career and then Lindsay doing his ACL with about 5 minutes to go... twilight zone stuff.

There'd be no 3 peat if penrith went through this.
