  • Where do we go from here-Constructive discussion

While tonight’s loss was terrible I had come to the conclusion after the Penrith loss that we are a bottom of the 8 maybe missing the 8 standard team.

We are so far from competing against the top teams let alone in the running to win the premiership

Before you come at me that it’s only round 4 etc and I’m over reacting , my conclusion was based on how we have performed over a number of years and not seeing seeing any real improvement, plus knowing we would have the usual suspensions and injuries ( see tonight) as the season unfolds

I’m at a loss , there are smarter minds on here than me, what do we need to do.

I want constructive thought , not just rants about how shit xyz player and coach is .

    Sandon Smith needs to return.

And we need to concentrate on the starts and winning the opening 20.

The second half team outperformed the first half side by 26 points and nearly snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. Why were they better even with 11 men? Without Dom and Teddy and Walker we went alright. So I think teams need to be picked on merit not reputation. Defense was not there in the first half why? What ever happened to the Bondi wall?

Sometimes it just needs to be as simple as that.
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.

Was listening to Woodsy talk to Ronny Palmer on his podcast , he mentioned all our players , especially our forwards whwre insanely fit during Sticky’s first years.

explained why we could perform the Bondi Wall and constantly come hard off our line…. Reminds me of the modern day Panthers

            That was two decades ago.

            The game has changed.

For me the Panthers are relentless because they're all 23, have the same back rower body shape (even their halves) and seem generally impervious to injury.

We have different bodies all over the park. Bur particularly in our halves.

I think we're fit enough . but our energy often seems low.

when were not as dominant defensively as we once were our handling will be an issue.

no long, long kicking game esp when not making big metres .

no clear dominant half/ organiser/ I suspect keary us the talker .

teddy whilst not a bad captain, doesn't seem to command the respect of referees, seems to question decisions more then take an authoritative role.

Dom young ...early days but more gaps in his game then I thought...js...good winger , average centre defensively at least, e butcher...handling prone.

I doubt it...but do we overrate ourselves, sometimes we seem to take weaker teams lightly, the first 1 Min 30 sec put us on the back foot .

no genius sharing material here, were well capable, and ithink a fair portion of blame lies with the players rather then robbo .

              again, just my 2 cents.

I know the conditions were poor tonight but discipline has been an issue for few years now, Basic skills like catching, passing and tackling need to be reinforced over and over, you would think by the time a player reaches first grade they would have these skills down pat.

We need organising half with a much bigger boot than what we have also one that’s a little bit bigger than what we currently have., these short kicks, inaccurate kicks and kick down the oppositions throat kill us..

These are just a few areas we need to change.

It was a low point for us today, especially with the HIAs and send offs. But I don't think its season over by any means.

I'm still confident we have the personnel to beat any team on our day. We will be playing our best footy in the second half of the year, we just need to keep in touch for now.

If anything, todays game shapes as a turning point for me. I've never seen Robbo so animated during a game, or Kez so down and serious when being interviewed afterwards.

This might be the game we needed to rock the boat a bit. Robbo just needs to loosen the reins, and be himself not what he thinks he needs to be.

Mindset, attitude, professionalism! We had it in spades in 18-19. It strikes me that we have lost that edge and we now probably have 3-4 who are just happy to take the coin on offer without giving 110% every week or genuinely trying to improve their game. You can't just rip half the team out after a few bad results but it's on Robbo not to be Mr Nice Guy because it's at the stage now where if he doesn't get a grip, it's got the potential to get a lot worse

A lot of other teams seem to be evolving/improving and we won't be competitive if we can't improve/adapt to where we need to be.

We have good young talented players in Sandton, Billy and Watson. (Wong as well) Robbo shouldn't be afraid to use them when they are available.

One main problem is the inconsistency in their performances, not only as individuals but as a team, as there is a stark contrast in the stats between when they win and lose.

In the modern game, it's very hard to win a game when you have less than 50% of the ball and if you want to compete against the better teams you need greater than 50% of possession and set completions of better than 80%.

The stats of the past 4 premiers shows this - I added Penrith in 2020 to demonstrate their consistency in these two KPI's over the past 4 years. Sure one may say the Roosters stats are consistent as well but they are a fair bit below the KPI's of teams lifting the Summons-Provan Trophy post GF Game.

                          2020 - Penrith 54% - Set completions 82% - Storm 52% possession and 80% set completions
                          2021 - Penrith 52% - Set completions 80%
                          2022 - Penrith 52% - Set completions 81%
                          2023 - Penrith 54% - Set Completions 83%

                          2020 - Roosters 49% - Set Completions 77%
                          2021 - Roosters 48% - Set Completions 75%
                          2022 - Roosters 50% - Set Completions 75%
                          2023 - Roosters 48% - Set Completions 75%

                          2023

                          48% possession - 17th
                          75% set completions - 17th
                          896 missed tackles - 6th
                          298 errors - 2nd
                          228 handling errors - 6th
                          169 penalties conceded - 2nd

It's only a sample of 5 games but one may conclude that for the Roosters to win a game or be a chance of winning the game they need better than 50% of possession and 80% plus set completions and a low error count for starters

Our two Centres are liabilities in defence. Every team knows Sua'ali'i doesn't have a clue when he has numbers coming at him. Manu great with the ball, but also a liability in defence.
Stop playing Sua'ali'i at centre, wing is his position. Manu and Young defending together is turnstyle city. I don't know the solution to that, maybe Keary at 7 again and Manu 6.
Walker gives away too many penalties and six-agains and seems to struggle getting back on side.

Sitili to the bench or reserves. He is lacking in effort atm. Butcher or Wong instead.

In our last two games the go forward has been terrible. Penrith were making 19m a set more than us. The Dogs 10m more each set. I’d say that injury and sin bin stuffed up the interchange schedule but Collins only played 40 odd mins and May half that. Expected that both would’ve played more.
