  • Tedesco didn't ask for the first minute dropped ball challenge

Watching the replay it was other players who asked for the challenge, not Tedesco. After the decision Tedesco said "I didn't ask for that challenge" the ref said "there were about 5 guys who did" tedesco says something else the ref said "well there's a lesson in that, not everyone charge at the ref to challenge" tedesco says "I know but doesn't the challenge have to come from me as captain?" the ref walked off and didn't answer

    What is the rule?

It seem very strange to me that we would risk losing our challenge right in the first few seconds of the game.

It was an obvious shoulder charge that dislodged the ball - just another biased call against us by the bunker. Radley would have been binned for that.

Other teams are coached to lie down to get our players binned/sent off/suspended. Or say "he called me a nasty name" - our player gone for a third of the season.

Robbo just cops it sweet and refuses to coach our players to lie down and milk. He seems to think this will curry favour and respect from the refs, NRL and other sides. He is mistaken, and the last 11 years have proven it time and again. On the contrary we are arse raped by the refs and bunker.

It's time Robbo stopped playing nice - that's if he wants to stay longer than this year as coach.

I’ve seen Atkins confirm with a captain on numerous occasions before going to a challenge, so why not this time? The question of Annesley should at least be asked.

Regardless of what happens, the result is the same but it would be nice if the refs were held more accountable.

Pretty sure I have as well. There must be a defined rule - either any player can ask for a challenge, or only the captain. Usually you see the player (Young) looking at the captain and trying to sell him on the idea of challenging. Then the captain either does or doesn't. Same as in cricket. Tedesco picked up the dropped ball and was heading off downfield kind of playing the whistle.

Given the comments from the ref, the rule must be that anyone can challenge. If not, then the ref doesn't know the rule.

Why is it called a captains challenge if it was reviewed when the captain never asked for it.
In the wash up the ref will say I heard several players asking for a review and one of those sounded like the captains voice that's why I sent it to be looked at.

One thing I don't like about the rule is the players get to watch it on the big screen before the 10 seconds is up, it shouldn't be shown for 15 plus seconds so the players need to decide from what they think happened live.

Yeh 100%, you see refs all the time including Grant Atkins tell players that they can’t challenge because they are not the captain.

He obviously got flustered as you could tell by his response to Tedesco when he said “There’s a lesson to be learnt, not everyone should charge the referee”.

It’d be great to see a ref show a little bit of humility and admit they got it wrong and revert the call because they have the power to and it was his lesson to learn, not Tedesco’s. Tedesco did nothing wrong but got brushed off with a real arrogant response from Atkins.

It’s not a good look seeing players consistently shouting at the ref to challenge though, I do agree there. I’d hate to see it become part of our game.

Fair enough, but the ref needs to deal with the captain and look at him for his decision, challenge or not. Can't rely on voices. If a player says "challenge", he should look at Tedesco and if need be ask "James what are we doing?" The whole thing was rushed and poorly handled by the ref.

I watched it again and the funny thing was, when the ref said there was a challenge, the bulldogs players actually argued that it took too long for it to be called. The ref said "no they just got it in in time".

I still don't know what the rule is.

You have to give respect to deserve it back and Grant Atkins all night spoke to our captain and the rest of our players with such disdain and arrogance, I thought he was an alright ref but last night he almost looked as though he was reffing to some sort of an agenda against us.

I think Robbo pretty much nailed it in his response towards the end of the game, when Burton illegally dislodged the ball from Manu right in front of the ref only for Stevie Wonder to rule it a drop ball against Joey!!

I heard this too but I wasn't sure if anyone can call for the challenge or just the captain, it didn't look like Dominic Young called for it so I would be interested to know who actually did?

It's time someone from within the club stood up to the NRL and demanded answers. Every year these corrupt and criminal referees give me more reasons to turn off the game.
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.

Another reason whyTedesco shouldn't be captain.

What part of Captain’s challenge didn’t you understand?

There should be two challenges a game.
The refs make more than enough mistakes each game to warrant it.

As for this incident our players should also know the rules and not act like they are the fkn captain ffs.
