To be fair regardless of your personal opinions on advantage this has been pretty consistent with the NRL for a while, you need to progress the ball 10m or more towards your opponents goal line for advantage to have been taken.

I think the ref was confused and thought it was yawnion.

See in Yawnion what happens is that if there's a knock-on near the line, they let you go through unlimited rucks and mauls until you lose the ball before saying 'no advantage...'
