How Joseph Manu can return to Sydney Roosters in 2025 CODE Sports

The Sydney Roosters have left salary cap room for Joseph Manu to return in 2025. Meanwhile, Ray Hadley has had enough of Sonny Bill Williams and rival clubs are circling for Angus Crichton. Phil Rothfield reveals all in Saint, Sinner, Shoosh.

The Sydney Roosters refuse to give up hope of having champion centre Joey Manu return to Bondi Junction - as early as next season.

Manu has signed a big money deal in Japanese rugby union with Toyota Verblitz – but is free to rejoin the Roosters from Round 12 of next year’s NRL competition.

This masthead can reveal Manu is locked in for only one season in rugby union – not two as has been widely reported.

Japanese rugby starts its competition in early December and finishes with the grand final in late May.

The Roosters would leave $500,000 in their salary cap to pay Manu for half of a season.

This is why they were not interested in chasing Zac Lomax from St George-Illawarra or any other big-name centres to replace both Manu and Joseph Sua’ali’i – knowing the Kiwi superstar can return.

Publicly the Roosters will deny Manu might return next year.

Trent Robinson threw journalists off the story with his comments at a press conference last week.

“It’s a huge loss for us and the game,” Robinson said, “I’m not sure if he’ll be back.

“I’d like him too because this is his home but after this year I’m not sure we’ll see him again in a professional sense.”

Outside of the Roosters there would be other options for Manu in rugby union.

There had been talk of him linking up with a Super Rugby club and possibly playing for the All Blacks.

However next year will be his 10th season at the Roosters if he returns in May.

He loves the club and knows James Tedesco will retire at the end of next season and the fullback spot will become his own.

    Interesting.

    What's Hadley's beef with SBW?

1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.

I love how jourons say I have this exclusive but the club will deny it. Talk about an each way bet. That's how the weed usually makes his living.

Thanks for posting do you have the full link? Would like to see what is said on critchon
nrl and chooks need to get this Manu deal over the line providing Manu wants to come back mid season after Japan comp! This would be great for the chooks and also the salary cap as I still think we have plenty atm with all the players leaving
if Billy smith and toia can get us through the start of the year
          1. teddy / Manu
          2. young
          3. toia then Manu from round 12
          4. smith
          5. Marky n

of course clubs are queuing for Gus now
If he wants to stay in nrl if roosters give him another offer he will take it as he wants to play there
I think 1 year offer only to let him owe the club and continue his good form, or 2 years max - wouldn’t go over that so we avoid potentially another last couple of years

Funny how buzz apparently knows Teddy will retire haha
he will only be 32 next year
id like to see Manu giving the fullback role and teddy transition to centre like rts has done

A bit risky relying on always injured Smith and a bloke who’s never player first grade and is coming back form major injury.

And where is Toops? NOBODY apart from stupid fans have said he is retiring. He’ll be going again next season for sure.

Yeah we have rocks in our head if we don't re-sign Toops. What well run club would let 3/5 starting backs all leave in the same season.

I personally think not signing Lomax was a huge miss. Not only is he killing it, but he can play anywhere in the backline. Who plays fullback next year when Teddy gets injured or concussed? We are losing our 2nd and 3rd string Fullbacks. Manu & Suualli will be missed but especially for their versatility imo.

Unless the club are sure that he will return and then stay on after 2025 this would be silly.

We already have some players on good coin who we are not getting full value for, we can’t afford for 500k to just sit there unused.

We can really, 2026 needs to be the year we start our new era.
                            Manu is worth waitng for.
If he gets to rugby and loves it, never comes back, then so be it.
We wish him well and move on.

Suaalii's going to Union is a good thing. It's what he wants to do, and he's not really suited to league.

Manu's manager said last year they weren't entertaining the idea of playing anywhere but the Roosters and a deal to be re-signed would be finialised in the coming months. He should stay in rugby.
