  • State Of Origin is a bore and waste of time, & I'm hoping no Roosters are selected

State of Origin used to be the ultimate gladatorial contest.

The ref put the whistle away, and it was 80 minutes of the best of the best taking it to the next level - a level well beyond your 1st grade club game.

So many iconic moments from the past. But, no longer.

    - It is now refereed the same as a club game. There is no flexibility.
    - The modern era has knocked all the characters out of the game.
    - the rivalry just ain't that fierce anymore, and there is no passion like in the past
    - Commentary pre-game and during the game is stacked around "Queenzlandaar" nonsense and nauseating cliches
    - plenty of the best players these days are Kiwi's and thus will never get a game. It isn't necessarily 'the best of the best' as it once was.
    - shithouse philosophies like "club combinations" or "he's got Origin experience" as well as coach/selector biases ensure that individual form & talent doesn't always guarantee selection
    - Gould's 'last word' is no longer

I'd much rather none of our players get picked, so they can avoid injury, stay fresher. We would get an advantage over other teams in this regard.

Sick of Origin. It's been incrementally ruined over the past 10 years.

    Fair enough.

I'm just curious to see who the ex vermin coach selects especially the NSW fullback.

Personally, I love SOO. It’s a great spectacle and awesome advertisement for the game. We need that for the game to grow.

In terms of our player involvement, my view has always been that I like seeing our up and coming players get a run because it builds their confidence and skill. On the flip side I don’t like seeing more seasoned campaigners like Teddy play as the club gains are almost opposite. Just my personal opinion anyway.

I agree that Origin is not what it used to be, not even close and I too would be happy for our guys never to play the an Origin game again. It died when they banned the biff, shoulder charges and general grubbiness. It’s a shame he’s a Kiwi and born in the wrong era, because JWH was build for old school Origin.

Having moved up to Qld two years ago, I can tell you that I now “get” the how Queenslanders take it so seriously and passionately. It’s like a bloody religion up here. The bloke across the road puts his Qld SOO flag up the front yard flagpole weeks before the first game and it stays up for 6 months afterwards. My future son in law is a Maroons tragic and is taking me to the Suncorp game sitting in the Qld Supporters member area; I even get Qld merch with the tickets. There was a time when I cared about NSW winning and would have said no fkn way, but now I really don’t care. I’ll just go and enjoy a game of footy, wear my merch, have a few beers and not care who wins. No more frustrations, just watch the footy and soak up the atmosphere. All of my focus is on another team and the frustrations that often brings me!

I had a chat with McGuire a few weeks ago. When I quizzed him about Teddy he said, “it’s up to Teddy.” He was suggesting that if Teddy is playing well he’d be picked. Well he’s playing very well so as long as that continues I guess that means Teddy is in.

Was that when you gave him a ride on your magic carpet?

Me too Steakface - all I care about is the MIGHTY R W and B. Continue this form Roosters. Nothing stopping us from going real close this year.

Why on earth would you think 13 would make that up? He clearly has met and spoken to many of the players and coaches, as have I.

                Deal with it.

Back to original post - I agree. There's still the 6 again Vlandys ball refereeing manipulations and selective refereeing of one side you see in club games. I wish none of our players were picked, selfishly. But to the players, it's a big deal - a nice payday just for playing in a series with the additional benefit of big game experience plus increasing their income potential contract wise.

Again, selfishly as a rooster fan I hope Teddy doesn't get picked - but you can certainly understand him wanting the chance to retire from Origin (as I believe he will after this year) as a winning captain.

The entire lead up bores me to tears. Frankly, if I have to endure another Matt Nable monologue on Foxtel promoting the game, I'll kick the tv in.

But once it's kick off, I get almost as engaged in the match as I do for a Chooks game.

I have zero interest in this exhibition game. I appreciate it makes money for the NRL, but I couldn't care less who wins and who loses.

soo's great. as a rooster fan you obviously don't want to lose players or have them injured playing it but origin's not going anywhere and i just enjoy it

It’s not the same, but I still enjoy it, going to a game makes it even better.

if I was Madge, I’d pick Edwards, he’ll be therefor a few years with Cleary,Yeo and critta. No knock on teddy, but if you are planning to be coach for a few years, may as well pick a team you think you can keep together for a while.

Edwards reminds me of teddy about 5 yrs ago. Energetic, speed, busts tackles, chimes in when needed and backs up well.
