At the end of the day there aren't many "great options" out there. He is the best option for our current situation. Give him 3 - 4 years.

that is a big call and while I dont agree I can see the point you are trying to make.
I think we will have some success but I will struggle to get enthused about the joint with such a hollow man at the helm.barbarian ......arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!!!!!!!

I'm curious.
You could say Bennett is a deceiving person also. As Brain has pointed out, he never intended on coming to the Roosters. Wasn't the "leak" a smokescreen?Born and bred in the eastern suburbs.

Bennett and Smith are miles apart as human beings.
Its why Bennett has been in the game for the same amount of times and won about 6 comps while Smith has won zero.
You can build a forteress but it will come crumbling down if the joint is made of straw or sticks.
The bricks in "league" terms are principles, honour and respect.
Not words.
Actions when it counts.
And Brian talks the talk.
But in the past he struggles with the walk.
Players will not go into bat for him when it counts because he bullies them rather than inspires thembarbarian ......arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!!!!!!!

Would Bennett have won 6 comps with the squads Smith has had to work with?
Unlikely.Born and bred in the eastern suburbs.

Bennett wasn't very honourable when he screwed over two clubs to suit himself. Bennett is a great coach but he has always been extremely self serving while at Brisbane. His persona of being the good quiet bloke isn't exactly right. He had alot of favors done for him up there from the league and the broncos. The way the situation played out with us and then him eventually leaving the broncos left alot of people with a bad taste in their mouths.
Back to Smith I agree his main weakness is he can be extremely tough with players. I had mates who played in the lower grades at parra and if he didn't want you or rate you as a player he didn't sugar coat it. In that sense he is extremely professional but at the same time probably a bit cold. As a person he is a decent bloke. My old mans business sponsored parra during Smith's 10 years at the club. He was polite yet always honest about the club.
As I've said in other threads I'm a massive fan of Smith. Fans will point to the fact he hasn't won a premiership. The occasions he has got to grand finals he has taken no name unfashionable sides to the brink of success. Only to fall short against superior sides, at other times he has been plain unlucky losing games that should of been won.
What I find ultimately encouraging is that he still hasn't won a premiership and that would burn him. Yet he looks at us and has jumped at the chance to coach us. He would know the potential we have here and he would see the oppurtunity to win something before his career is finished.

Top post Fitzy!
I like the positive angle you found on his not having won a premiership yet and on the fact that despite how poor the Roosters are going he still wants to coach the team.
Despite all that, I am not a fan of Smith's but will retain an open mind on the subject."The price of freedom is eternal vigilance."

geez you are one twisted farker trew, you must be bored.you want smith to fail so you can prance around here and say i told you so.people round here forget their roles, know your place we are supporters not club officinado's.the club has had a go and made a very hard call, the new coach has a decent track record,it's hard to make diamonds outta coal, talk about respect, well our players only respect their wallets so who cares if smith rubs them all the wrong way,imo our club will give smith better resources than he ever had at the other joints,so you never know a comp is not out of the question.he will just weed out the ones who dont like his style & bring in players who will perform.

yes ghost he will do all that and
he still wont win a comp.
but we wont run last!
It will be like when Gould took over. We will make the semis every year but lose when it counts.
That for me is not a death ride.
I think that is a good result.barbarian ......arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!!!!!!!

Look, I believe Bennett is an excellent coach. I just think his attributes are more mental than tactical. In this day and age with youth being more and more difficult to manage he stands out as a player manager.Born and bred in the eastern suburbs.
