  • Overrated Pack.

Let me begin by saying that i think we have some great young players especially up-front, HOWEVER some on here are overrating them so much it is not funny.

Our pack gets rolled nearly every week. Yes, we are physical and defensively brave. That doesn't translate into eating territory, which in my opinion is their most important job.

I'll concede that our game plan (ad-lib, dummy half running) doesn't fully cater to that however surely at least two (especially the big minute players) should be getting close each week.

On the weekend, none of our forwards came close. Manly had 5.

Maubs is starting to give me the shits because as good of a player that he is, he just doesn't like going infield to help out the team when we are trying to make it out of our own end. He is such a reliable and skillful player, however goes quiet when we are under the pump. I appreciate that he made SKD look better defensively over the years and is a lockdown defender however for an 80 minute player we need much more work out of him. It's too bad that he isn't faster. He would make a better centre. Either get more involved or play less minutes.

MK has just gone softcock this year. Last year he was developing into a big minute, rugged, metre eating prop. This year - bubkus. Watmong owned him yesterday after their altercation.

Hargreaves seems to get dominated easily in tackles. Great and inspiring when on the field but needs to bend the line more.

Tasi needs to start. He has bigger minutes than JWH and runs much harder. Hits just as hard and has better footwork.

Masoe needs something, anything. At best he is an impact forward. He plays small limits but for farks sake get involved when you're there. Waste of a bench spot for mine.

Guerra - no complaints aside from his tendency to fall asleep in defence. For hsi experience/pay packet though he has delivered and then some. Would make a better edge runner than Maubs.

Arona has exceeded expectations but Smith has started his infamous musical chair routine and after playing some of his best football, Arona has been rewarded with a trip back to the bench.

Cordner has a great future but is still physically undersized. Doesn't have much impact when he runs, however can hit a good hole. Criminal to not score that try yesterday but made up for it with a linebeak. Keep him on the bench.

Taka has good prospects but unless he can play bigger minutes, he is a waste of a bench spot. He just camps on the edges and can be seen puffing away after a few minutes. I love his offload but he takes it too far. He is a big human, but doesn't run as hard as he should because he is concentrating on squeezing the pill out. The opposition figure him out. Run hard option 1, option 2 is offload.

Jake has been in dreadful (by his standards) form. Still very busy around the ruck ( doesn't have much company) but is trying too much offensively. Just give him a simple game plan Brian. Tried to take Pearce's workload on his shoulders and failed. Had little support from two rubbish halves.

All in all, this pack has a bright future but they need to stop believing the hype and roll their sleeves up. We need a proper hard-working lock. I liked Arona in the 13, however i think Maubs needs to find himself in the middle of the field.

Curious to see what Bosden brings to the table.

All in all we have too many impact forwards, not enough workers.

Also, if our forwards are our strength, why doesn't coach Smith utilise them instead of letting Sammy, Mini, Peni get dominated each time they take a run (of which there are way too many).

    You aren't alone there.
I think the majority of the people on the site think that we are far from the finished article, but the future is looking good - that's what the excitement around our pack is about.

This is another chicken and egg type debate like we were having in 2006. Do the forwards create space for the halves? or do the halves create space for the forwards?

No forward pack is good enough to counter a compressed rushing defence. The physics are stacked against them. The problem is in our backline which was not good enough to threaten the defensive fringes and force the opposition to spread their defence.

100% agreed. I also think we have great forwards but people thinking that our forward pack will be the best in the comp is way untrue nothing compared to Storm, Bulldogs, Rabbitohs, Sharks, Raiders, Tigers, Broncos and Cowboys.
First of all Leilua still has to turn into a world-class winger, Moga needs to mature and Maloney needs to come. Also after kennedy's injury his form has dropped so he needs to improve on that. All in all the main thing that's holding us back is the amount of errors we make which is something we need to improve on!!

They are the youngest pack in the league in terms of games and age. They are punching way above their weight currently and they were definitely not the reason we lost yesterday.

The problem is there are no workers in the pack and our agility in the middle is sub standard, teams that play the rooster through the middle with an up tempo game usually beat us. The top packs in the comp are Manly, Brisbane Souths and Cronulla with Melbourne the best coached pack. Watch these teams play their game through the middle, they dominate the ruck first then go wide. The Roosters go wide, from side to side before going forward, it's back to front and while on our day this can be effective, more often then not its the reason for our dismal form.

We all know it was Bwaiff's fault. Its just that they're not as good as we think they are but theyre not as bad as Rooster haters say they are infact 10x better

Big Mike is right and I agree with it all they are overated and have been put over by the opposition Their time will come but they do need to think of the basic part of football making yards and tackling. As for Kennedy I think he has been playing needled up.

When your top prop in JWH struggles to get passed 100m a game there is a problem in metre eating for the forwards. No doubt they are becoming a great physical defensive side in the middle but they don't eat the metres and thats what the great props do best and get recognised for.

                        OP is pretty spot on.

Maubs is still a player who frustrates me with his workload in attack. Until he wants to fix that, i don't think he's captain material. MK is probably playing injured, but is also a overrated on here

Having said that, i have seen us contain some forward packs relatively well through our defence. It's just our inability to roll up consistently up the middle like some other packs which is letting us down. IMO, a lot of this comes down to how Friend and our forwards communicate

                              I mentioned this theory before:

I'm sorry mate, but over the last couple of months all your posts have been the least insightful and biggest load of dribble I've ever seen, and I am very much beginning to doubt you are in fact a rooster fan.

Good to see I'm not the only one.....
