Chad Townsend - One year deal Report

One thing I appreciate about Robbo and the club in general is they can make hard calls when needed. I would be disappointed as a fan even if an elite half was parachuted in if Robbo didn’t think Sandon was ready. I would understand it though, as it’s results based and we can put a young half’s development to the side for a premiership. If we somehow jagged Moses, Hunt, DCE, Hughes or Cleary you’d take it. That was the situation when we signed Cronk. It’s worth noting it wasn’t a unanimously popular decision getting him in at 34 years old
Chad T however is not an elite half , has never been in the conversation as an elite half and is not worth jeopardising a young half’s development for. Walker is not a 6 and is in career best form at 7. Sandon has had limited opportunity but managed to play the house down when given a chance in the halves. If it’s purely for depth and he is playing NSW Cup, that’s fine. I don’t think it will be that though. Keary is still head and shoulders above Townsend so unless they wanted to protect his legacy by not having Keary sitting in reserve grade on 800k a year in 2025. Even that would’ve been a better option though

We're punting Sitili, have no money for Stefano, need 2 big, strong, young, fast centres, and all we're buying is a mentor for Walker and Smith?
Has Cronk departed?

Chad Townsend will quit the Cowboys at season’s end with the premiership halfback to ink a $300,000 deal to finish his career at NRL powerhouse Sydney Roosters.
This masthead can reveal Townsend has agreed terms on a shock move to the Roosters to continue his glittering NRL career at the Bondi glamour club on a one-year deal in 2025.
Off-contract at season’s end, Townsend had attracted interest from a number of clubs, with the Bulldogs and Super League club Catalans Dragons making a play for the 33-year-old.
But the Roosters have won the battle for his signature as coach Trent Robinson looks to bolster the Chooks’ scrumbase stocks following the impending departure of veteran playmaker Luke Keary.
The Roosters are keen for an experienced head to help mentor rising halves Sam Walker and Sandon Smith and Townsend, a seasoned professional who steered Cronulla to the 2016 premiership, ticks that box.

Sandon has shown glimpses of great quality when given the chance and he’s been patiently waiting for a couple years.
For all the flack that he’s copped, I’d take an underdone over the hill Luke Keary next year over Townsend
Not saying Townsend is good, but it’s experience & Sandon isn’t ready for a full season I don’t think. Hindsight Keary would have been better staying but I think there is more to that situation.

Not sure about this one.
The coach said after the Fifita debacle, that the club did not tell Sitilli he could look around ?? Sitilli is going.
And I think he said that Sandon Smith would play 6 in 2025.
Please don't play the fans as mugs. I will admit, the coach never mentions the fans.
Anyway.

If it's true I'm sure I'll learn to love him. However wasn't Cronulla's premierships (and his success) basically a sham whereby the NRL let them juice up on that fake doctor's peptides then cry victims for a free premiership? I dunno if Townsend was ever all that good. Hope I'm wrong.
