All their contract were back ended, apparently, and come to a head from now on. That's partially why Manly are in the cap mess they are now.
Looks as though Canterbury will be doing similar.
We, hopefully, aren't following this road because it leaves you in a bind if you have to re sign some great talent all in the 1-2 year mark.
Imagine having to find cap room, in 2-3 years, for Moga, RTS, Pearce etc? Panic stations.
That's my understanding of the situation, anyway." A man can only walk as far as he can see"

Manly insist star halfback Daly Cherry-Evans is not going anywhere in the short-term despite the 23-year-old’s manager, Gavin Orr, requesting a release from the final year of his contract.
Sea Eagles coach Geoff Toovey went on the front foot on Thursday to play down the impact of Orr’s request, which was denied by the defending premiers, to say Cherry-Evans would remain in maroon and white until the end of his deal which finishes in 2013.
Cherry-Evans’ concerns stem from the fact he rose from nowhere last season to become a key member of Manly’s premiership win, make his international debut, and the small matter of having another two years to run on a contract in which he is paid $85,000 a season – a paltry figure considering his standing in the game.
“A contract as far as I know is a contract,” Toovey said on Thursday.
“Until he tells me (he wants a release) I can’t comment on it.
“It’s not concerning at all, because I thought the wheels were in motion to sort out Daly’s future and beyond the current contract.”
Manly’s salary cap issues are believed to be tied to a number of back-ended deals negotiated by former coach Des Hasler, which has given them very little room to upgrade Cherry-Evans’ current deal.
“We’ve been lucky enough since ’08 to keep the basis of a really good squad,” veteran prop Brent Kite said.
“Dessie did a good job in the past keeping the squad together but he has left us with a few headaches.
“But it’s a catch-22. You get those players staying last year but they might not be here unless they had a back-ended deal.
“It’s the nature of the beast.”
But Kite believes that if Orr was able to utilise third-party payments effectively, it would help appease Cherry-Evans and also ease the burden on Manly’s tight salary cap.
“Maybe even people outside the club (could help Cherry-Evans stay), it’s probably one thing that would help if we had those third-party deals that some other clubs enjoy, and helps you retain players,” he said.
“I’m sure the club will be doing everything, so if there is anyone out there with a lot of money that wants to see Cherry stay at the Eagles let’s hear from you.”
Cherry-Evans isn’t the only Manly star with question marks over his immediate future at the club.
Fullback Brett Stewart appears the most likely to be forced out as he is believed to be chasing a four-year deal worth $600,000 a season.
But Darcy Lussick, Steve Matai, Tony Williams and Kieran Foran could all find themselves on the open market at season’s end.
Manly co-captain Jamie Lyon accepted the Sea Eagles would find it nigh on impossible to retain their whole premiership-winning squad, saying “it will be hard keeping everyone. It always is with any club that wins the grand final.”
But Toovey remained confident they wouldn’t lose anyone they want to keep.
“We’re trying to make sure we’re not (going to lose anyone),” he said.

Really?
The only way Manly could get out of this situation was:
1. Let players go (and they have)
2. Continue the back ended agreements, if the players are willing. They will have to pay the piper one day.
You want us to be in the same situ?

Manly have not let anyone go. The article is completely devoid of any facts.
In addition salary cap management is not the coaches responsibility. I do want us to be in manly's situation, 2 premierships in 4 years.Last edited by Cockadoodledoo; 05-27-2012, 04:23 PM....
