  • I think that part of the criteria to get paid a million plus for a halfback is that he should be able to kick a 40 metre field goal.

      • I think if he wants to test the market he may as well pack his bags
Uncle Nick has shown he won't tolerate players that aren't fully committed (look at Trell's exit)
No one is bigger than the club

Love Sammy and really want him to stay and admittedly he deserves more than $900K but if he isn't fully committed he can be on his merry way.

Sammy seems smart though and it would surely have to weigh on his mind that moving to the broncos would mean playing under coach Kevvie, who although a seemingly very nice bloke is not an elite NRL coach. Compared to Robbo, who is a proven champion coach. Yes there is the extended family living in Brisbane angle, but I sense Sammy's ambitions are higher than a small town mentality.

Of course it's all just speculation from us on this forum, but it makes sense to me that there is no reason for Sammy to sign with us now at the minimum he can expect on the market, when if he happens to rise to the occasion in the finals the roosters will be forced to bump up their offer by at least several hundred K per year.
The players dont think like the fans do.
The days of the Roosters always getting their man or not losing a player they want to keep are over. The Broncos are a very desirable club for players that are Queenslanders
I believe his dad & his uncles are money first & I think that because all 3 of them played for multiple NRL clubs. They played for who ever payed the most.
Dont get me wrong I want him to stay at the Roosters but the Roosters are going to have to pay a premium to keep him.
I believe his advisors want him to be the highest paid Roosters player.

          • Ooh it’s so boring the media hype/drama around young Sammy. I don’t read any of it.
This season the media crap and speculation surrounding our players is a long list. It started in the 1st round with Spence, then later with Manu, Angus, Teddy, young Joe and JWH. Average media crap being every 4weeks on our squad.
What any player earns is none of my business.

            • special talent but unproven in finals, can't justify the hefty price tag yet. If we reach prelim this year then definitely make him the million dollar man

              • Ash Taylor was the last half to be paid $1 mill on potential and look what happened to him.

No player is bigger than the Club.

I would love Sammy to stay but not if it throws our whole salary cap out of whack and take us years to recover from.

                • I just wish he would sort his future before heading in to the finals. Not the best thing to have hanging when we want 100% focus for the rest of this comp.

In the unlikely event that he leaves, it would be a massive face slap for us, we have given this young man the royal treatment with his development. Eggs in basket stuff.

                  • signing players or not signing players is always something of a gamble. if you balk at offering sam 1m+ a year and are happy to let him go then you're gambling that he's not a premiership winning half.
sure the club has a responsibility to sign him for the least amount he's happy to take but he looks every bit a premiership winning half to me

Some may also think why doesnt the club sort this out before the finals?
Its up to the club to sort this out they have offered him 900k per season for 2026-27 & he hasnt signed so the ball is in the Roosters court to up the amount & stop farking around.

                        • So did we offer Sammy only 2 years and $900K knowing he was a ticking time bomb with his ACL?

Now that he has to have the op will we offer a longer period and up his price?

Do we still wait until after the end of the season or try and finalise it before 1st November?

I take all rumours about Easts as BS so I believe we will likely agree close to what he is after.

                          • From SMH - Excerpt from Andrew Webster Column

Such is the cruelty of sport, Smith now faces a nine-to-12-month recovery just like Walker, whose injury comes in the middle of delicate contract negotiations.

The Roosters scoffed in July when the Walker camp asked for roughly $1.5 million a season for the 22-year-old, but over the past few weeks the two parties have been inching closer to a resolution. In fact, it was hoped a new deal could have been inked as early as this week.

                            • at one level i don't think this affects sam's value too much. he was always going to play for us next year so other clubs wouldn't be affected by his time off with this acl but at the other level it does rob him of the chance to lead us to a comp which might have bumped up his asking price a bit

I feel he will test the market as there would a few after him - possibly up to 8 other clubs
