we won't win the comp if we throw 3 intercepts every game but that's not going to happen again. there were some other dumb things and two defensive lapses in the first half (one made tricky cos it was near the goal post).
on the other side of the coin the defensive effort of the second half was exactly what it takes to win a premiership, and we showed once again that we've got a lot of points in us - has there ever been a team that scored 6 tries with 40% of the ball?
we need to fix a few things but we're still in the frame

I would be given its not a tactic we've seen during Robinson's tenure and it's not something our primary kicker did once all game. It is consistent with Brandon Smith's play though.

To my original point I think these are individual issues rather than team issues.

Manly struggled to get back onside from both those cheese early kicks. They weren’t terrible plays. They got us off our own line and got them backpedaling.

Crichton, Collins and Rads were immense and their effort was huge... thanks boys. Sammy has the keys to the car but his dad (Keary) obviously doest want him to clock up too many miles. His running game tonight , Sammy, was spot on.

For some reason May, Whyte and Butcher got owned last week and this. Spencer was a bit better. Sitilli seems lost. It seems that the agro is gone when JWH is not in the ranks.

Brandon and Keary need to be seated in the corner with a couple of pointy hats in front of a mirror. That was absolute rubbish from the both of them. They both need to be dropped next week for an ego and reality check. I think its was Rads who said last night post game that both Collins and Gus gave Keary a huge serve.

Watson was ok but missed a couple of tackles and was not that impactful. Hopefully it was one bad night.

As for that ass-klien ; he is so blatant in his game manipulation. The Turbo penalty where he was tackled by Rad was insane. It should have been a penalty to us for obstruction and it ends up with Radley on report. Disgraceful. Suaalii gets headhunted and only a penalty.... Jared or Rads would have been sent to Alcatraz on life sentences.

If the MRC charges either Rads or Jenko with suspension, we should fight the charges to show up the mockery that is the MRC.

Sandon needs to come in next week for either Keary or Cheese.

That’s if he remembers how to play; it’s been so long.

That's a huge responsibility for a young half however it's the missing ingredient that would take this great roster to the next level. Sam needs to start demanding that his team mates follow his lead and listen to his calls. Robbo should also be reinforcing this!

He should feel comfortable giving Keary and The Cheese a serve when they fark up like they did last night. They placed the entire team under unnecessary pressure and almost cost us the 2 points. Their lack of respect for the opposition and the 2 points changed the overall dynamic of the game. Errors and poor discipline started creeping back in. I was furious to say the least.

Sam and Teddy should share the captaincy moving forward imo.

Sam is an amazing talent. But we need an organising/structured half to complement his style. I'm hoping Sandon can become that game managing style player next season. The fact no one shut the game out when we were up by 14 with 10 to go was disappointing, especially considering the amount of experience we have in the spine.

Even though Cheese/Keary/Walker can't kick much more than 40m on the fly, I wouldn't mind those kicks for the reason you mention. However, there were a couple kicks from our 30m line that were caught on the full and returned near halfway, immediately putting our defenders back under pressure. There is no thought process. It is either premeditated or impulsive.

Same with the intercepts. I can forgive Teddy's because we would have scored. We were still unlikely to score with Keary's two intercepts, and more importantly we didn't need to score. The risk/reward was not there. Walker was dumped for doing that shit against the Sharks last year.

Also disappointing was Robbo's response in the presser. Something like "it is good to learn all our lessons in one game". We have been doing this all year ffs.

The first half roosters was premiership winning quality. I think we got carried away forgetting Manly are not the dragons and we got badly burnt by not respecting them. By throwing wild passes trying to get a 60+ win we underestimated that they had enough talent to come back. And they did. The 3 intercepts tells us we thought they were gone and so got careless. And the top team that they are, they almost beat us. Our fault was no respect for Manly after we were 22-0 up.

The two that really killed us and our forwards were after long chunks of defending.

58th minute - kick on 2nd tackle in a 7 tackle set after defending for over 3 minutes straight. Kicks from 40m line, goes 45 metres. Manly side all back on side by 2nd tackle play the ball around 25metres out.

65th minute - kick before last after defenidng for 4 minutes, from 35m goes 35metres in distance. Manly side all back on side by 2nd tackle play the ball just before the 40m line.

In both cases playing out the sets would've been more advantageous and put Manly under more pressure.

58th minute- 2nd tackle on your own 40m line means you're getting your last tackle kick from the oppostion 30m line which is an attacking kick. A catch on the full 15m out is not an advantageous play.

65th minute - play the extra carry, kick from the 45m, you should be landing that on the opposition 10m line and boxing them in. 2nd carry 15m out as they try to centralise play... not 40m out on 2nd tackle centre of field.

I can't disagree with any of that analysis, but sometimes I wonder if they kick early in the count because they're shit scared they'll drop the ball again.
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs

Agreed, but I do like a dummy half-kicking and think it is especially useful in this team. Cheese generally does a pretty competent job in this area but the timing and execution were off last night.

Agreed, after defending for so long, ball in hand for a few more tackles was the way to go. He didn't strike them sweet either, which was undoubtedly due to his own fatigue.

Anyway, I would like to see him continue with it. It adds a bit of unpredictability, takes pressure off Sammy and Keary and when he hits them right, he tends to deliver a lower boring flight gaining some extra yards, and a chance at a 40/20. He just has to think a little more about when to use it and execute better.

Getting a big score early is no guarantee of victory in the modern NRL because, generally speaking, possession means points. Manly were always going to get an avalanche of 6 agains and penalties at some point and we were always going to be on the back foot, you could just feel it.

That said late career Keary has been disappointing. He hasn't gotten old and willy like great halves do, a la Terry Lamb, Cooper Cronk or dare I say DCE. He's just gotten old.
