  • Our cap space

Interesting to hear reported that Val Holmes manager banged our door down trying to get him to the Chooks when JS & Manu decided to leave. We knocked him back as we didn’t have room & the way I read it was salary room, but maybe I’m wrong.
It surely couldn’t be because no room thinking we have a quality list of backs. We now have no backup FB, Toops ageing, Smith will never play, Toia who knows after his injuries, Murphy will never be an NRL player. We have Marky Mark & not much else apart from kids to come through.
With JWH,Manu,JS,Keary,Sitilli going I would have thought we had cap space even though Walker,Lenui get upgrades.
Not saying Holmes should be with us, but he’s a certain starter, can play FB & kick. I honestly believe there must be a major signing as the team next year is at best 4-8th position & no real threat.

Lots of anxiety about our lack of signings. We just need to be patient. We are a smart club who plan well in advance.

I still reckon there is a big one coming next year - it seems eerily quiet, too quiet on the signings front.

I think our forward pack is sorted for years. Just short of 1-2 top class backs.

Hopefully Manu returns and that young centre turns out a gem.

Holmes is on $850,000 so no thanks. $500,000 maybe?

Probably more a case of we don't have the room for you, being a euphenism for we don't really think you're worth that sort of money.

We knocked him back as we didn’t have room.....for a guy who is on way too much money. I think the club was being polite.

We said we don't have room not to be rude.

I'd be curious to know how much we've got after re-signing various players.

Part of the story is that guys like Watson, Walker, May, Crichton and Leniu are hitting purple patches. Whereas last year some were sitting at a crossroad (including Leniu - who played about 10 minutes of the GF and had a lot of doubters on here - now he's gonna be one of our key weapons during the finals).

IMO we are managed by long-term thinkers who would be planning our cap 10+ years in advance. A million bucks is still almost 10% of our cap space and we have a few big decisions to make, including about the future of current players... including Young, Mark N, Smith and Pauga. Yes Manu and Sua'ali'i will be gone but as Treebeard would say... we must not be hasty.

No room = We're not paying $850k for Holmes. We could potentially make some room if you can be more realistic about his asking price.

Cap room can be interpreted a lot of different ways.

We didn't have cap room for Tupouniua to remain, not because we don't have room in the cap but because we moved Radley into the second row and the club has a structure they stay dispclined too. They couldn't have Radley, Crichton & Tupouniua all on 2nd row starting salaries.

As others have suggested I'd say we were just being polite to Holmes and his manager but it wouldn't also surprise if he's above what the structure of our cap allows for a starting centre.

We've got to remember when we lost RTS we went through a season of Gordon and Latrell before we signed Teddy.

The club have shown they wont just simply spend money, they will want to find the right target and that might mean waiting until next year.

I think after the grand final we will announce a couple of big name signings.
The club and players we have signed want to keep everything on the quite until the season is over.

Don't see Moses as one of those signings, well for 2025 anyway unless Sam decides he wants to head home.
When the new signings are announced you can guarantee there will be the usual whinging about the salary cap but we are freeing up a heck of space with retirements.

Tigers have signed Skelton. A poster on here was adamant that we had him.

                          A big miss that one.

                            A grubber classic.

Very good player but despite the inexperience of our backline next year I don’t see many players in the NRL cracking it. We’re gonna prioritise youth for higher reward and I for one am super excited to see what happens

Not sure it is a big miss, might have been a good depth signing, but he is a 25yr old that hasn’t really been able to crack a consistent gig at the dogs.
