I think the story was that Ron wanted to play juniors for Easts like his dad but residency rules prevented him from doing so - he was literally living across the road from the junior boundary.
Wasn't this because Souths had changed the boundaries too by this time?

Too young to have seen Coote, and you don’t get much of a feel by watching clips, so can only go on the word of those who did, sounds deserving.

a lot of the press and past players talk about all the work he has done off the field which is great, but not really part of the criteria?

so to those who did see him, is he more deserving as a player than Kenny or sterling?
Being an immortal now, is he in the top 5 roosters of all time to have played for us?

interesting to hear some of the thoughts of those who are old enough to remember him in his playing days.
If you are old enough to have seen Bradley Clyde at his best, Ron Coote was that, and more, for about dozen years. He is generally considered second only to Johnny Raper as the best lock to have ever played the game.

        Good question mil
I remember when I was young watching him at the old Sports ground. I was only 8 to 13 in those years so running for the corner posts patting the players on their back as they were leaving the ground & playing on the ground after the game finished was more of a memory.
For me at the time Artie had a huge profile so he was the main man at the time but Fairfax & Schuburt used to get heaps of attention also because they used to score tries & they both had long hair.
Because I was a halfback I used to like Johhny Mayes so I would watch him.
For me Brass, Bunny, Mark Harris, Peard, Mullins, Walters & Jim Porter were all as known & as good as Coote. Im not saying Coote doesnt deserve to be an immortal but he didnt really stand out to me.
Artie, Mayes, Fairfax & Schuburt were the ones that stood out to me.

An Easts legend, one of our very best. A fine gentleman aswell. Richly deserved.

Very happy to see the NRL do the right thing and give the older generation the nod while they're still around to soak in the accolades. Could tell how much it meant to him. Amazing.

yeah, i reckon they should go back to having a longer time between retirement and going up to rugby league heaven but better late than never

                  Congrats.

                  What a player!

He lives not too far from me down the south coast. I still get excited when I see him in town.

That sh*t stain club has been stealing our juniors for decades.

Why only one though - Ken Irvine should be an immortal as well.

When this old Whippet was a pup, the 1972 GF was a gift to MW, Easts absolutely shafted.
The shafting continuing to this day.
