  • Official Injury Update

The Sydney Roosters Squad has been assessed following the Club’s Round 26 NRL match against the Raiders.
Sam Walker suffered a non-contact left ACL rupture in the 12th minute of the game. He will undergo reconstructive surgery later this week.
Brandon Smith sustained a contact right MCL and ACL injury in the 38th minute of the game. He will initially be braced, and a decision will be made in the coming weeks regarding operative management.

Victor Radley suffered a fracture to his left scapula in the game’s 50th minute. He will commence non-operative management and will be reviewed by a shoulder specialist.
Nat Butcher was removed from the field for a Head Injury Assessment in the second half and was subsequently diagnosed with concussion. He will commence the NRL’s mandatory 11-day stand-down period.
There were no other injury concerns for the other players that featured in the match.

In all seriousness, these injury reports annoy me to bits. Tell us how long they suspect the player to be out for FFS. Rad's news in particular leaves it so open ended. Is he out for the season or back some time in the finals?

Rads is 3-4 mths, his season is over and he'll be sleeping sitting upright for next few weeks.

Butch is the only one who will play again this year and the club would have no idea about the rest.

Not great news for Brandon Smith a multi ligament injury will likely slow down his recovery.

Radley will be pushing it though to be somewhat fit to play - depends on the damage and what the specialist says and how it can be managed if a return to playing is possible - He can have a word to Tedesco who came back after 4 weeks
              • Week 1 finals - Roughly 2 weeks
              • Week 2 Finals - Roughly 3 weeks
              • Week 3 finals - Roughly 4 weeks
              • Week 4 finals - Roughly 5 weeks

I think they leave it intentionally vague as it depends how players' bodies respond?

Sounds like Cheese MIGHT play in the GF as his ACL was strained rather than torn and NRL bro medicine is that you don't need an MCL to run as it can be strapped. Whereas the other two are out for ~6 months (which would make them available for most of next season but without a proper pre-season?)

Nrl physio saying since 2020 we have had 12 ACL injuries
                  next closest club has 6
                  riff have had 1

Unbelievable even though these types of injuries keep happening. I'm sure we will be competitive for the rest of the season but it is a long way back for 2024.

Cooper Cronk could give Radley some tips as well - we don't know if Radley's fracture is as severe as Cronk's one

How did Cooper Cronk play the NRL Grand Final with a broken shoulder?

Cooper’s fracture was (later) reported to be a 15cm break across the middle of the shoulder blade

yeah, apart from 3 season ending injuries 2 of which will affect next year and 1 hia everyone's fit.
our recent record with double acl injuries in the same game goes to show how the statistically close to impossible can sometimes happen

Return after 6 months from a "standard" ACL reconstruction (not LARS surgery) is fraught ... approx 50% chance of recurrence. That chance drops by around 10% for every month of extra recovery, until it pretty much bottoms out after 12 months. A player who doesn't rely on a lot of lateral movement could possibly return on the earlier end of that scale, but for a half-back who relies on stepping off that leg, and it holding his entire body weight when kicking, a minimum of 9 months would be expected, but likely the full 12 to continue playing with the minimum risk. IMO he's too young to not take the full recovery time and give him the best chance of having a long career without further ACL issues. Would we gain that much if he returned for the last 2 months of next year? He'd be better off not playing in '25 and taking the time to rebuild his strength into a full pre-season and then a full '26.

This assessment is WAY too optimistic

Walker is booked in to have his reconstruction on Thursday also a great story here about Crichton staying up all Sunday night hanging with Walker watching Seinfeld re-runs to try and support him.
