What the panel said on NRL on Fox were completely right. The side looks clueless and don't play to their strengths , the game against Canterbury on Monday for example the guys kept the ball alive and it troubled the Dogs with so much movement. The boys go in the half time break and there is hardly any second phase play - all one out stuff.

The problem is the side doesn''t have a plan B, C or D in attack. The set plays produced against the Warriors @ The SFS? They played like a team with some attacking structure, weeks on its back to through the heads and play what you see, this type of strategy can only take you so far.

Since the 2010 season we have gone backwards, i truly believe if a coach gave Mitchell Pearce plays to set with the backline we'd be in the top 8, instead i feel like Brian Smith works new plays for different opposition each week and it isn't working. Pearcey is screaming to be coached with simple directions.

We need a modern day approach. 3-5 Set plays that we can call upon in the attacking twenty. Remember the sweep play of Lopini and Tupou inside, around the back? in 2008, the Sharks employ a similar tactic with Jeremy Smith and Bukuya. Forwards running with eachother to cause doubt in defenders minds?. Decoy runners to open up space for Aubbs and Geurra.

I''ve honestly had a gutful of the way we play. I want Brian Smith to succeed and ultimately win a Premiership with our team but i believe he has taken this team to a certain level and is running out of ideas. After next season he's contract should not be renewed.

Last yr Tallis said that was the biggest problem at St George when he was under smith , he said it was confusing every week a different game plan

Mate we have 3 FG coaches at Easts and we still cant play, its beyound me. You would think they would get the defensive patterns and fitness down and stick to a basic game plan till they got that spot on.

Ahhh back in the early coaching days of freddy. I remember round 1 v souffs when Freddy took over, we popped up with about 3-4 set plays in that one match. Blew them wide open.. worked to perfection. Such a shame the only set plays this team has conjured up this year is about one in the SFS warriors match......

I remember in this year's city v country match, Pearce used a wrap around..(have we ever seen that employed by Smith here?). Freddy as coach at least had a little bit of creative juice

              +1

You have to have structure and set plays, they showed the simpliest one of all that the soft use, Luke at dummy half to Sutton and then back inside to inglis under the posts.

You cant play in 2012 ad-lib footy, you cant compete with no structure, you cant be unfit and u cant compete without the wrestle!
What a great set of football wisdom those four represent!

If they find such fault, I'm starting to think we must be doing plenty right.

Like I said in another thread, without structure we could have Jennings, Hayne and Dugan in our backline and still suffer the same fate week in week out. Time to go back to basics and play to those players strengths. Hasler is doing it with his cattle, they won't win the comp, but they will certainly win more games than us this year. I reckon with the forwards we have, and with Maloney plus another quality couple of wingers and Belamy (who I believe will not come), we are a top 4 side. Either Smith needs to change, or we need to look at another coach. It's just so uninspiring, the players are starved to be coached!!!

It's sad that the three biggest dopes ever assembled on any panel across the globe (Tallis, Geyer and McDougall) can see the glaringly obvious which our staff is oblivious to each week.

                        Agreed totally.

Why not use our big boppers to move upfield and then start using the ball once in good position ? Our forward strength is so much better than our backs yet we persist on letting the backs slug it out in the middle to the beginning of each set, which more often than not puts us on the backfoot at the outset.

League is not a complicated game.

Absolutely. Freddy's team were constantly bagged for being having no attacking game and relying solely on kicks to score tries.

Yep, Gus would have been faxing him the game plans each week.

He can't change, that's why his teams have always been either white hot or awful - there's no structure to fall back on if the harlem globetrotter play doesn't click on that day. Brian was brought to the club to toss out the trash and instill a positive culture, he's done that and it's now time to wish him his best in his future endeavours whilst we bring in a young and hungry coach that demands to WIN, ala in the style of McGuire at Souffs.

                              Get on it Nick.

At the start Gus spent a lot of time with Freddy and the boys.. I drove past one day a couple weeks before the season started and stopped and watched for 20 minutes or so and Gus was out there waving and pointing and yelling whilst Freddy stood beside him.. I think as the season really got going he backed off...
