  • Searching for our halves!

Since 2019, this team has been searching for its halves combo.
The game has changed considerably since then almost making it impossible to have small men in your back line. Keary has fought on well but it was clear along time ago that he and Sam were targeted consistently by the top two teams.
Sam stepped up this year and is getting bigger, but I fear for a Walker/Smith combo… it will be the same old.
And at the same time, the kicking game has not been strong enough!
I know they want to promote from within, but they need to then go after kids that look like they can bring this through the grades to the top team.
Bellamy would have sorted this out in 2020… Easts have been searching since then.
Teddie is locked and I think they need a first glass hooker that can deliver good ball… and one strong half with a big kicking game to compliment Sam..I don’t see that player yet… maybe Rodwell or our next generation can fill the void.
Who are the next in-line within? I haven’t seen many lower grade games.
Who is coming through at other clubs with enticing?

I think the above duo will be good ..it jas to develop next year.
I feel bad for Keary he was terrible yesterday his worst game ever.He is forgiven..he has been mostly great. When your forwards play shit so will the halves.
Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe

We fail to make teams like Penrith and Melbourne work out of their own end time after time. Our long kicking game has been atrocious since the pairing of Keary and Walker.....and it won't improve with Smith and Walker. Also, two small halves again that will get exposed by the better teams defensively. You can sort of protect one small half, but when you have 2 either side of the ruck is obviously pretty hard. Keary has been poor for quite a while, how the club saw it fit to extend him earlier in the year is beyond me. We dodged a bullet there. I don't know who the answer is to pair with Walker, but a bigger body who is solid defensively and has a long kick would be nice.

Keary has been a great servant and represented the jersey amazingly, but the game did change a lot.
Defending on the back foot is just too challenging for the smaller bodies.
I don’t have any optimism for Sam/Sandon combo!

Easts were at their best when they had a great spine and low cost no names coming through the ranks ( who turned into superstars )

I think they should have went after Luia… he has energy and with Walker could have been a great pairing.

You have to admire what Storm has done with Jahrome Hughes, and yes size is a part of it. At 90kgs he hits the line more like a hooker than a halfback.

That is the difference between Storm and us. Storm look for physical attributes first and back themselves to mould those players to fit in their system. We seem to be doing the opposite in getting all jizzed up about signing peewee Walker, and then letting him dictate to us that we must play touch football.

We might need another Brendan Hall type player.
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.

Melbourne's line speed all night was high tempo. Sometimes our dummy half was just picking the ball up and we were getting tackles. Their ability to control the speed of the ruck also a great contributor.

Burton would be a great acquisition but unfortunately he’s tied up at the Bulldogs

All I know is that you can’t carry two small halves and two halves where neither can kick long or high enough. We need a decent six 6 who can kick.

Whoever our next 5/8 has to have a better passing game than the slo mo passes that Keary has thrown the last few seasons whilst having no real depth to his game as seen against the Storm when often stationary. The Robbo tactic of a stationary defensive wall has resulted in all the losses to the riff and storm.

We need to search globally for a half that can do the job.

                              Souths snagged him.
