Maguire has quit as Blues coach and has signed on as head coach at the Broncos. A terrific signing for a club that has plenty of talent, but lacks discipline, panders to big egos and too many “old boy” opinions. I reckon he’ll get the Broncos back into the top 4 next year. He’s had really crappy rosters in his last few club coaching gigs, so no surprise results were ordinary. The bloke is a real hard arse and will change the culture to extract the best out of them.

Agreed. Our next year looks like being the same no matter how good our roster. The ‘rooster style’ by now is hard coded into the boys. We’ve had many turnovers of players but still are the most error prone and ill disciplined team in the comp and I don’t think it will change with Robbo at the helm.

I disagree. I think you’ll find that the current ‘Roosters Way’ is deconstructed. A bunch of younger players in the squad is the ideal opportunity to start from scratch. Rather than being a rebuilding year it should be a reinvention year.

We had the 5th best set completion in the comp this year and sadly we were conceding the most penalties in the comp long before Trent Robinson arrived.

I'm more worried about our defence then I am about our completion rates. They only really tell half the story anyway, its all about where you are handing the ball over and what you've done with it more than how long you held it for, but our defence seemed to get worse as the season wore on.

Agreed and I have made similar points multiple times, just pointing out the nonsensical argument that Robinson can't coach errors out of a side as it doesn't stand up against any simple analysis.

We averaged the same amount of errors per game as the Panthers and only 0.2 more than the Storm.



I thought our goal line defence this year was actually still very good, but it's our yardage defence that needs improvement. In our week 1 finals game we just allowed Penrith to dictate exactly where the game was going to be played. We saw similar throughout the season in games Vs the Sea Eagles, Panthers & Storm.

Field position is king in the modern game. The best sides earn it through good yardage defence, high tempo yardage running sets and defensive pressure to force turnovers.

Penrith did a great job in week 1 of getting to our edge with a long pass from dummy half and stretching us. then turning it back underneath when we were scrambling early. And once you lose the momentum in the first 2 to 3 plays it usually means an up tempo set for that attcking team and a retreating defensive line. In comparison, they were very effective at stopping our 1 and 2 plays with the ball and forcing us to work hard to get any momentum at all. Once you throw in that we don't have an effective long kicking game it means that we were under a lot of pressure. Manly, we dominated but then Melbourne did a really good job on Toops and Young. Sualli'i seemed to be the only outside back making any metres last week.

Be interesting to drill down to know what happened after those errors.

You could lose possession a metre out from your opponent's goal line and then get possession back from a last tackle kick by your opponent. The error hasn't been compounded by conceding points.

On the other hand, you could lose possession inside your own 20 and in the ensuring set the opposition scores—the error has been compounded by conceding points.

The Roosters have a habit of compounding errors also by giving away penalties and set restarts

The defence needs a lot of work - not a fan of the watch and wait / slide and back peddle when teams spin it wide and teams also know that when they spin it wide and come back through the middle they will catch out the Roosters middle Defence.

Other than Bellamy or Cleary - the only coach i'd take at the Roosters over Robbo is Fitzy

I don't see that happening so at the moment the best option we got is Robbo
Who knows maybe Brett Morris will be ready in a few years and have some fresh ideas.

one result from madge not being blues coach is that edwards as full back is not 100% guaranteed. i'd like to see teddy retire from rep footy after this year's tests but if he wants to play on then there's an opening at origin level.

madge seems a good choice for the broncs but there's no guarantee he's the man. he's won a comp but he's also gone from the penthouse to the shithouse at club level. what works at origin level doesn't necessarily work at club level

Gus and Andrew Johns have genuine passion for NSW. I don’t know if Johns would have the temperament. I don’t think either would put their hands up. I struggle to come up with a decent candidate who I’d have confidence in. Screw Madge for letting the state down.
