  • Cleanout looms at Roosters with Brian Smith's entrance

ROOSTERS-bound Brian Smith is preparing to reprise the Edward Scissorhands role that turned Newcastle's fortunes, admitting yesterday he may not "want" all the players he will inherit next year.

And in an ominous warning to the glamour club's under-performing stars, Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce has refused to guarantee that any contracts are safe.

The 2009 wooden spoon favourites have virtually the entire squad of 25 under contract for next season, leaving Smith with no room to move in the recruitment stakes.

The former Eels coach was given a charter for mass change at Newcastle as the club prepared for life after Andrew Johns and Danny Buderus.

While Noyce said there were no plans to cut contracts and Smith indicated he will "inherit what's there", the Knights mentor left little doubt he was not happy with everything at Bondi Junction.

"There's very few decisions about players to be made," Smith said, before adding ominously: "They may not all be the players I want."

Noyce said while there were no plans for a mass cleanout, no guarantees could be made about contracts. He said Smith would share contract decisions with recruitment manager Peter O'Sullivan.

"Brian has indicated he is happy with the roster. We have 90 per cent of the players under contract," Noyce said.

Asked whether he could guarantee contracts will be honoured, Noyce said: "I don't really want to get involved in that. At this stage we have about 90 per cent of the roster contracted and that's factual.

"Moving forward now, we need to set goals and engage Brian in the remaining 10 per cent and how we get there. These are the things we are going to work through with him in the next months, subject to his involvement in Newcastle."

Told Smith had already indicated he may not be satisfied with the roster, Noyce responded: "You are getting ahead of yourself."

Smith was castigated by Knights fans when a host of home-grown stars headed by Clint Newton and Josh Perry were shown the door as part of a mass cleanout following Johns's retirement.

Changes are needed but I reckon this past month has shown the squad doesnt need a mass cleanout or anything...

              Really ?

I think we need one or two roughie signings but apart from that, a good pre-season and an actual game-plan will do wonders with this team.

                I agree BigMike..

The clean-out has been happening for a while now..

Did Smith have anything to do with O'Meley, Fitzy and Shackleton going...??

Did Smith have any influence in the re-signing of Myles and the gun signing of Jared Waerea-Hargreaves...???

I can't wait to have coach that has them running different lines in the off-season and having a solid game-plan too...

Also, there are quite a few similarities between our team and the Knights.

Classy FB (mini or pez), young half, erratic wingers ( although this season Uate has been pretty solid), a tough little hooker.

I think just like the Knights he will start to get our forwards ball playing more.

I think the cleanout has already happened.

Soliola, Fitzgibbon, O'Meley, possibly Mason. I doubt Kouparitsas or Earl will stick around under Smith either. Sa, SKD and Cherrington are all talented, but if they don't pick up their form soon, I doubt they will hang around for long under Smith either.

I hope he sees the potential in our youth.

Can someone please explain to me why a few people here think SKD is talented? Can he sing, dance, whistle, play the spoons....because he is no first grade footballer.

Smith needs to look across the whole organisation.

There are a lot of players not trying and banking cheques.

When we were looking for a coach I always hoped we would get a senior experienced coach. IMO besides Bennett or Bellamy we could not of got a better man for the job.

What I know is that some of these young blokes will not know what hit them when Smith walks in. The professionalism and intensity he will bring to the club will be a shock to these younger players who have had it easy the last 3 years. He wont be scared to drop some of these players or give them a few hard truths, regardless of their reputations.

I have always liked Smith as a coach. What is evident in all of his sides are discipline and the ability to adapt different styles and structures against different teams. His track record of developing young talent at St George and Parra is clear for all to see. Newcastle were an absolute rabble when he got there, look where they are now. He is taking us over in much better shape, I'm certain if we are patient he will deliver us success.

Across the board. Especially with coaching staff!

Trewhella, do you know any of the trainers that Brian uses, or may use?

I hope he brings in his own psychologist(s) too.

One guy that needs to start showing some effort is Setaimata Sa but as Mack has alluded to in other posts, it is rumoured he isn't happy which may mean Smith coming gives him the out he might be looking for. I seem to recall that Sa has previously had bouts of being unhappy and if that is the case and he's a big baby who can't or won't harden up, I don't mind if he leaves the Roosters.
