The star rookie halfback leading the Roosters into the future has been charged with a serious driving offence in which a person was allegedly gravely injured.

Sandon Smith is set to face the Downing Centre Local Court for the first time tomorrow, charged with negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm.

A Roosters spokesperson confirmed they were aware of the matter and the NRL integrity unit has been notified.

The 21-year-old halfback rode in to rescue a Roosters side decimated by injury for the finals series, pairing with Luke Keary in the club’s campaign before they were knocked out in the preliminary final.

The Central Coast-born rising star created history in 2023 as the first player to make his NRL debut for the Sydney Roosters after progressing through the club’s Central Coast pathways program.

He featured in 15 matches in his debut season.

What is negligent or dangerous driving?

Negligent or dangerous driving means driving without the due care and attention reasonably expected of a driver. It puts you, other drivers and the public at risk, and can result in serious injury or death.

        The rules

You must not drive a vehicle on a road negligently or at a speed, or in a manner dangerous to the public.

        Penalties

If you drive negligently you can get a fine and demerit points.

If you drive at a speed or in a manner dangerous to the public, or cause death or injury due to negligent driving, penalties include:
        • large fines
        • loss of licence
        • prison.

So does the NRL make him sit out games next year if the court case hasn’t dealt with it before the season starts?

Depends how long the potential prison sentence is

Supposedly the person he hit has lost a foot, take that with a grain of salt though because it came from reddit

As bad as what he allegedly did is, it is unlikely the NRL could stand him down. Having said that, it is a roosters player we are talking about and we all know how the NRL like to make examples of them.

Negligent driving can be anything from changing the car radio station for a few seconds longer that ideal, and rearending another car to misjudging traffic at an intersection etc.
I'm almost too scared to drive a car these days, so much can go wrong.

It was not a negligent driving charge causing grievous bodily harm where he was speeding / evading police etc which is the top end of the scale for such an offence

The other articles omit the following important point

The report states that police will allege 21-year-old Smith was edging out of his driveway, where his view was obstructed by a parked truck, when another car hit him, and pushed him into a male pedestrian.
