So $60k to get you to the repair shop in 3.8s. Wow! Awesome buying.

Can tell you right now I’ll never buy a roosters jersey with BYD on it. If they are our new sponsor I’ll be bloody disappointed

Put it this way, our sponsor is way bigger than MG or Crown or TripAdvisor or any other piddling nonsense other clubs have.
Yeah I think they're arguably a very sensitive company to be getting involved with given all the geopolitical elements. Dunno what to say there... though, IMO it's fair to say that the US also heavily subsidises EVs (and like Europe, has essentially blocked Chinese imports by imposing crazy tariffs - the sensitivity there being that right hand drive Teslas are Chinese).

I dunno what a good deal is with EVs to be honest. We know they all have the sports car style speed off the mark. However, unless I win the lottery, I'm simply not in the market for an EV.

            ---

PS - what's with friends boasting about the fact they're charging their EV by sending me photos of their EVs, along with a message saying 'just charging my car'. Hey look everybody, I just filled up my tank and got a can of Boss coffee in the process [Gangsters Paradise starts playing in the background].

PPS - my cousin just got a brand new engine for his Citroen 2CV and has jigged the carby so that it uses 15% more air. That thing's purring along

So if BYD then that’s twice for Nick. His AP Eagers biz the distributor. A month ago he spent another mill buying its listed shares.

I am the last person to advocate for any Chinese manufacturer but having also lived there, I can tell you that BYD is extremely reputable (also backed in part by Warren Buffett). They started as a battery and components manufacturer a few decades ago and most tech companies the world over use one of their components - I think they recently had a secret project going with Apple and Toyota has now bought their plug in hybrid tech because it is far superior.

Point is, they’re a huge company and having driven a few of their vehicles, they make a pretty damn good car.

Shrewd decision from Uncle Nick - he wouldn’t be backing them if he didn’t see potential.

Better buy one now while they’re on sale because it’s a 5 year deal

I wouldn't be surprised if they're same-same as Teslas (not that I believe Telsa makes premium quality cars).

Tesla was unable to source batteries until they started making all their international cars in China. You can't have a company in China unless it's majority Chinese owned (which will 100% mean that some random CCP dude's been paid off in the process) so go figure...

Wouldn't surprise me if they're simply re-badged Teslas, made in the same factory.

When I say "good deal" for MG I mean relative to other brands in terms of package and performance. I don't believe any EV is a good deal at the moment because the resale values are garbage due to battery issues, and recharging infrastructure is not there. It will come eventually. Chinese already shifting towards Sodium Ion which are not flammable and will have more recharge cycles. VW already shifted to multiple smaller battery compartments, so it doesn't cost a fortune to replace one bigass battery.

The concerns about Chinese EV reliability are misguided. Electric engines are far simpler and much more reliable and durable than combustion engines. This is not like Japan playing catchup and taking many decades to develop more reliable combustion engines. China is the leader in EV mass production.

The engine/motor is only one component of a car.

Poor quality, poor safety poor resale. There is so much more to it.

There will be a BYD charity nest too. Every time one breaks down, BYD will donate $5000.
