  • FWIW Cheese has had a chat about it on James Graham's poddie. His take is...

    - (First on Cheese).... he's injured, wants to stay and hasn't talked to other clubs (partly because he's injured). He also hasn't even talked to Robbo about his future so talk of him being encouraged to leave is all immature. Says his partner's ingrained in the club's culture and they're living the dream though... no desire to leave. My crystal ball says he'll either be offered an option to stay for less or take this injury as a chance to reboot, show good attitude for his recovery and earn an extension on return.

    - May is as straight as a nail... doesn't drink and doesn't go out partying. Has a bit of a sense of humour but everybody loves it. Cheese is 100% certain there's been no incidents and his form (which has been terrific) is not an issue.

    - Ben Hunt then comes into it. Cheese doesn't think he could play #7 with Walker at 6. Wasn't opposed to him playing #6 but emphasised it would be a really short-term move.

TBH it surprised me to see Cheese talking about this stuff and makes me wonder how the club feels about it. Guessing it's all been cleared but I dunno? IMO his allegiance must be 100% to us, not James Graham.

Well, they kind of did actually.

Signing a player isn’t directly asking someone to leave.

That was well after Crichton's health issues had been resolved and he had re-established himself in the side.

              Poor comparison.

Why else would they’ve tried to sign Fifita?

Angus was never going to swap sides. He said it himself.

Because he wasn’t told to leave.

Because they rated Fifita, same reason you sign any player.

If that's right, then to me, it proves the report that he is influencing Siua. Siua would be well advised to take his influence from the club, his family and his manager, who ought to be stepping in and telling him not to throw away an opportunity with the Roosters like it means nothing. Sure, he can pick his friends but with stuff like that, he may well be the next to go. At the least, it will test the Roosters resolve to reset their culture.

They were the four words that terminated Terrell May’s tenure at the Sydney Roosters.

Despite playing all 27 games this season, the Roosters last week told a shocked May he was free to leave the club immediately, despite signing a $950,000 contract extension in April.

While the Roosters won’t comment publicly, this masthead has been told that May’s carefree attitude towards rugby league - and the club - was the catalyst towards his shock exit.

Sydney Roosters hierarchy demand their players are fully invested and some felt May wasn’t totally committed to the club and the game.

May also wielded some influence over a number of young players at the club – another concern for Roosters officials.

The club has no ill-feelings towards May.

Concern for May’s future at the Roosters started in September when he conducted a media interview during the finals campaign.

He said: “Sometimes I just get ‘I don’t wanna be there and don’t wanna play’.

“I gave it away twice, when I was 18 and then when I was 20. Both times I just didn’t want to play anymore. I get like that throughout the year as well.

“It’s a weird feeling. I don’t think many people experience it where one week they love the game and go on the TV screens and the next week they don’t want to be there at all.”

The comments set off alarm bells at Bondi.

One of the Roosters’ best players in 2024, May is well-liked at the club and doesn’t drink alcohol.

“I was devastated for him,” Roosters teammate Angus Crichton said last week.

“He is literally straight as an arrow. He doesn’t drink, he is a really good guy and he hasn’t done anything off the field to warrant this.”

May was subjected to hurtful and incorrect accusations about why he was told to leave the club.

He also said in the interview: “Sometimes I just feel I could quit, like in a day. It sounds a bit weird, but I get those thoughts sometimes where I’m just like ‘Is this really for me? I’m very grateful to be where I am and play with the Roosters, but rugby league isn’t the whole of me.’

“Then you just look at the bigger picture. You need to support your family and I couldn’t do it without footy. I have aspirations to take the club to the grand final and play for NSW.”

May represented Samoa in their two-Test series against England in England.
Makes a lot of sense to me. It’s what I posted a week ago that the club didn’t want to invest in a player who wasn’t fully committed and May said he had given the game away twice so a third time is very much on the cards and just not worth the risk. I don’t believe May is silly. Knowing that the November deadline was approaching and for sure he would have been told that if he tested the open market he would get much more, a statement like that sounds less to me like honesty than a ploy to get a release. To say it publicly I’m sure he knew he was going to upset someone.i think it was a calculated move and acting shocked was just an act. It’s just the timing. He’s now a free agent to get more $$ for his family and maybe play closer to home. I think he found out his true value and wasn’t happy with what the roosters gave him so went public saying things like ‘ I don’t want to play’. I can’t accept that he didn’t know exactly what to say to get a release. Only how is he going to convince his future employer that he didn’t really mean what he said? He’s going to have to tell them he’s fully committed then why not the roosters? The $$$$ that’s all it was ever about.

Too late. He did have a contract so could have refused to go. But he will get more elsewhere so I’m sure he’s satisfied. He can go hate footy at another club. We’ll move on from this.
