Why would we get anything for him when we are the ones who asked him to leave? What we got was freed up salary cap space and an open spot in the roster

Oh yeah of course thats a given - but i think of a player that some people are tipping to hit Origin, we could have played the situation slightly different. A club can tell a player if he wants to leave, we will happily negotiate a release with a fellow club - im sure it happens all the time, no matter if its the club or the player that initiates the release.
