Roosters coach Trent Robinson was coy about the club’s interest in Hunt, insisting he had the utmost confidence in the existing squad.
However, he conceded that unexpected names sometimes appear on the player market that cause a rethink. Hunt could yet be one of those names.
“He (Hunt) is an exceptional player and has done it for a long time,” Robinson said.
“People want a direct answer, but the thing is we’ve been clear about our squad for a while now. Ever since Luke made his decision, we were really clear with where we were heading over the next couple of years, and we were happy about that.
“But if the opportunity arises to accommodate that seven and nine position in different ways then we will, but it has to be right for the next couple of years as well.
“There are a couple of players that we’re looking at because of the injuries with a nine and a seven (going down). It didn’t only affect the back end of this year, but it also affects the start of next year as well.
“We’re really comfortable with some of the young guys coming through, but we are also looking at covering those positions if it’s right. We don’t feel like we’re in a rush, but if it’s right then we’ll look at options.”
The Brisbane Broncos and Dolphins are also eying off Hunt’s signature but there have been persistent rumours that the 25-year-old would prefer to remain in Sydney for family reasons, opening the door for the Roosters and Bulldogs to speak to a player who was part of the Kangaroos squad that recently won the Pacific Championships.
But Brisbane are facing a major battle to lure Hunt back to Red Hill as Toby Sexton’s management prepare for urgent talks with Canterbury boss Phil Gould amid speculation over the Bulldogs No.7 jumper.
So looks atm down to Us and Dogs because Hunt's after a premiership ring and won't get that with Flippers.
So we are eying 2 players but salary cap might stop us getting Hunt the article says......how the hack the Dogs have got so much free cash NFI they've been spending like pissed up sailors.
The Roosters have internally discussed the prospect of signing Hunt, but may struggle to afford him under the salary cap after recently upgrading boom halfback Sam Walker to a $1 million-a-season deal.
Salary cap problems? Fair enough, I could never understand the cap when we had a stacked roster, and now I don’t understand it when we have a mediocre roster.
Robinson show your coaching ability. No to Hunt. Go with Townsend and Smith until Walker is back. Get the ' forwards ' playing tough, uncompromising football.
That must have been mutually agreed right? They can't just release him without compensation if he has done nothing really wrong.
….. It was mutually agreed upon. He wanted to get the hell out of there and was bitching and whining the whole time.. that’s why it’s so ironic he’s staying in NSW.
Hunt doesn't really excite me - he is just a slightly upgraded Chad Townsend
For the potential disturbance it might make to Sam Walker, Sandon Smith & Moriarty it just doesn't seem worth it
