  • Who has been our best buy over the last 5 years

Who has been our best buy since we last won a premiership ?

I would suggest the list of high impact signing has been limited and we have been better at bringing players through like Wong, Whyte and even Sam Walker we bought as a 17 year old ?

I would list Watson ( who we had previously sold ) as being our best

This is a very good question.

    Hard to answer actually.

But seriously, what happened with Wong this year. At the end of the 2023 season, SBW was dead set creaming his dacks over him when he was commentating on channel 9.

Sam Walker has definitely been our most ' exciting ' player these past 5 years.

I’d have to agree with Watson. He has surprised many of us (including myself) that initially questioned the recruitment.

Watson - but even he was out injured for an entire year

Mark N might be by end of next year.

So going back to 2019 when we won a premiership? Cronk (though that was the 2nd year of his contract).

Excluding him and 2019 (where we didn't really sign a lot of players). Un. aaaar. Leniu or May maybe? Or... Watson?

Does Sam Walker count? Don't recall when he agreed to join us and it wouldn't have been as a ready made first grader either so might not even be able to count him.

Slim pickings I'd honestly say Suualii maybe? Was very good for us for the most part, although had an element of short termism around it as he used us as a transition to Union and we didn't win anything with him. Although could argue not his fault. Other mention would be Dom Young. He has his deficiencies but we brought him in as a 20+ try season winger and he scored 20 odd tries for us this year. Did exactly what was expected of him.

It's a really good question that highlights how off the boil weve been with some of our head scratching roster management. Binning people like May, Keighran and Verrills yet signing people like Momorovski, Nathan Brown and Oliver Gildart. Signing Brandon Smith on marquee money has proven to be dumb in hindsight aswell.

Technically would be 2020, because it would be 5 seasons. I guess the signings could've occurred in the year 2019 with deal starting in 2020.

Doesn't really change the goal posts too much though, still slim pickings.

Josh Morris was great in 2020, seemed to fall away the next year when Brett did his knee. Value for money I would upset a few people and throw Drew Hutchison's name into the mix. Cost us next to nothing and gave us good service. Watson was good at the back end of 2022 and was such a big loss in 2023. Great again last year. We haven't really signed a lot of players when you think about it.

Watto is the only one. The rest came thru our jnr system.

                          Ironically so did Watson.

Agreed with everyone else though, he was a really astute bit of business.

2022 off the bench he had a lot to do with our strong run home.
                          2023 horrible year with injury
2024 offered great utility and genuine ability at lock.

Great to see him make his debut in Origin this year.

This is a depressing question to answer.

Half a decade of mediocre recruitment is up there with our records against Penrith and Melbourne.

Luckily Aubbo’s in there calling some shots now though. God help us.
