Running with purpose overall makes the difference between winning and losing and that is purely about attitude.
Cameron Murray's purpose in a carry to eat up the open space as quickly as possible with the intent of hitting the ground as quickly as possible so that he can get the quickest play the ball.
Joe Tapine's purpose in a carry is to use his footwork and ball playing ability to keep defenders second guessing to make as many yards as possible or promote the ball to a player in a more advantageous position.
Sam Moa's purpose in a carry is to **** your whole rib cage up.

Angus out of form compared to when hes in form is the difference between jiust running and running with purpose.
What robbo is seeking is already there.
Spencer, cheese , rads , gus JWH and also Collins when he's on fit Robbos so called power running forwards wouldnt they?
Robbo is just rolling out excuses imoLast edited by Bondicigar; 12-20-2024, 06:31 AM.

Lock forwards:
Fahu Whyte - 94th percentile
Connor Watson - 87th percentile*
Victor Radley - 83rd percentile
Front Rowers:
Spencer Leniu - 87th percentile
JWH - 73rd percentile
Lindsay Collins 23rd percentile
Terrell May 13th percentile
So yes to answer your question we are already pretty well served for power running middles and I described the change as a slight deviation than a full change in style. May being in the bottom 13% of props for metres per run and Collins in the bottom 23% would be a concern given that without JWH they would share the large bulk of the minutes at prop. The argument for Lindsay is a lot clearer, he doesn't take that many carries and it is his work off the ball and in defence that has all the value, but he's also shown in the past he can be a very strong carrier of the ball so it will be interesting to see if Robinson wants him to beef back up a bit for 2025 or if he's happy to carry a leaner middle forward who doesn't take a lot of carries but leads the team in other areas.
Starting to give more minutes to Whyte, Wong, DVa'a, XVa'a, Foketi and Losalu would definitely see an increase in those metrics of metres per run and post contact metres. In the most overly simplistic argument giving May's minutes to Whyte will see those carries go from bottom 13% to top 6% and opens up the bench minutes for the young forwards mentioned previously. Again these are only my opinions, haven't heard Robinson go into any detail around the style he's referring to.
From a statistical side, second rowers are harder to measure as there is more variability to their running role where as a middle forwards role is almost exclusively hit ups.

Interesting reading the story on Fox about May. I can see why we may have decided to move him on as he definitely marches to the beat of his own drum

May didn’t ask approval for running the marathon from his new coach, but stressed there were no injuries that would hurt his preparations for the Tigers’ 2025 season.
“Nah I just do my own thing,” May said.
I would have thought he would have spoken to the Tigers S&C staff beforehand but he just went ahead and did it.

My thoughts as a competitive marathon runner...
- Marathon running is a particular discipline. It requires sorta the opposite mindset as footy or gym stuff as you need to spend a cr@p load of time working on improving your sub-max pace and calculating exactly what you can hold steadily for 42.2km. More explosive sports are about max efforts, which require a different mindset. In theory I think it's a good exercise as it teaches you a certain level of maturity about training/conditioning that I think many people lack. I'm biased but it really is hilarious 'feeling' how my running impacts most people around the streets. In short once you reach a certain pace, your gentle/cruisy pace (breathing normal, not sweating, low HR...etc) is faster than most people's strong efforts but you're just quietly gliding around the place making little, soft steps. Difficult to articulate, but IMO marathon running greatly improves your focus & maturity as you need to be consistent and good at planning ahead. Also, you've gotta do your target pace + recovery/physio, otherwise your body's gonna be farked.
- To me it's a red flag that May is constantly jerking between doing fark all and then has these motivational bursts where he smashes out a massive block of training. Whatever works I guess (and he's elite + earns $$$ so good on him) but I think it suggests he lacks maturity in regard to his training/prep. There will be other guys who are always super fit & putting in extra prep/training (including boring rubber band / stability work with physios...etc) because that's how they're wired. May might get there one day but right now he comes across as a frustratingly talented player who needs to work on his consistency because he's either hitting the KFC and lazing around 24/7 or he's announcing that he's just signed up for a marathon, or some ridiculous get fit regime to prove he can exercise when he wants to (or something like that).
- Doing a marathon at a slow pace won't injure you. If he were doing a bushwalk then nobody would give a shyte. I wouldn't read too much into possible dangers of it. Also without the conditioning you can't do a fast marathon so it's kinda moot whether or not he coulda hurt himself... very unlikely IMO.

Having heard much of what he has said after we released him I sort of get why there may have been some red flags.
So getting rid of him and giving a chance to some of our up and comers (and there are a few with big ticks) is probably a good thing. There was always the risk of losing some of those or missing signing Fanafou. But they now see there are 2 or 3 spots up for grabs in the next couple of years.
May will likely hit the ground running and then back off a bit. That's what happened last year.

My ramblings only but Just maybe with JWH at the club, the alpha dog was able to keep him in check with club expectations and standards, with JWH leaving they probably saw there was going to be noone there able to keep him (or Brandon) in line so they decided to give them their marching orders.
Lindsay is a big dog but he doesnt appear to be an alpha like Jared was and they possibly just didn't wanna f$ck around with the games anymore.
