Quality timing over quantity is what make the Panthers successful in this department and we all know where the Eels playing system got them.

If you were coaching a team would you instruct your players to never offload and look for second phase play?
I think success fools us into thinking that everything one person or club is doing is all good and therefore everything everyone or club is doing is all bad. Penrith are not a better offloading side than Parramatta, not only do Parramatta do it in volume but they do with the quality of Paulo and the creativity of Cartwright who’d I’d say is the most creative offloader since SBW.

I don’t think coaching should ever be about ultimates such as should never offload, I am mostly pragmatic when it comes to my work so I’d imagine I would be simialr as a coach, where as I feel Trent Robinson is more idealistic which is something I really admire about him as a coach.

Yes this is a forum of opinions. I don’t mean to discredit you I just think it’s a moot point we can agree to disagree on.

      Correlation Vs Causation.
Players that can offload can usually find a way in any circumstance so I'd have to say yes they kill the team being dominated more so...

Robbo can rave on all he likes about the roosters way we’re ready to go blah blah we have all heard it before but one thing is there for all to see and that’s his appalling record against Penrith and the storm it’s starting to become embarrassing for us

The real problem that needs to be addressed is the great divide between our best and worst performance.
spin it how you like , but over the last couple if years the squad we have had can produce a performance to suggest they can beat the best then the next week look like cannon fodder.

All clubs record against Penrith since 2020 can be said to be in your words "embarrassing" - mmm why they have won 4 comps in a row and been in the past 5 Grand Finals.

Parramatta have the best record vs Penrrith and Storm since 2020 - hasn't resulted in any premierships - Storm are 4 wins and 9 losses vs Penrith - 2 of those wins were in 2024. - 3 losses and 1 win in finals (2020 GF)

                Parramatta

                vs Penrith

6 wins and 7 losses - 3 losses in Finals Games

                vs Storm

5 wins and 5 losses - 1 loss in finals

                Whereas

                Parramatta vs Roosters

                2 Wins and 7 losses

By Rights Parramatta should have the wood on the Roosters given both their records vs Storm and Penrith.

Some teams have the wood on others - Penrith have the wood on all teams especially in finals - they learnt a lot from that 2020 GF defeat -down 26-0 after 46 minutes was certainly not Penrith like.

It all starts with fitness and Penrith are the fittest team with the smartest playmakers, to guide them around and stick to a game plan. Now that Luai and Fisher-Harris have left, it has handicapped the premiers which gives the Chooks a chance.

When Panthers boss, Matt Cameron, was interviewed by James Graham, he said player fitness was the key indicator when recruiting or promoting. Could the player play at the level required by Ivan Cleary for sustained periods, was how they picked their team.

This is what previous greats like Cordner and Friend were elite at. Fitness should be the focus of this preseason if the team is to play the up-tempo, power play that defines Roosters footy.

Personally, I like that Robbo has a style he wants the Roosters to play, rather than copying other successful teams. It has been that way since the Roosters soft underbelly was identified in the early 90s and the club enacted changes that have seen constant success for nearly 30 years.

Sure we saw this in the Panthers final where we were being dominated in the ruck and Angus Crichton was offloading and turning over possession or losing yardage as a result. I guess I’m probably more so talking about effective offloads.

I think I would probably also preface that with there are exceptions as well, players like Cartwright and SBW are essentially ball playing when they are offloading, it's not about recycling possession for them but rather promoting the ball to a player in an advantageous position.

Look at some other teams overall record vs Storm since 1998 - Broncos have had some fair sides for much of that period to have such a poor record vs Storm

                      Broncos - 14 wins and 42 losses -1 draw - since 2020 1 win and 9 losses.
Souths - 7 Wins and 34 losses - Souths have never beaten Storm in Melbourne - since 2020 - 2 wins and 11 losses
                      Roosters - 19 wins and 32 losses - since 2020 - 1 win and 11 losses - 18 and 21 before 2020

We are getting new blinds and replacement external shutters on one of the houses and the dude that turned up to provide a quote seen the Room with all the Roosters merchandise and had a chuckle so I asked him who he supported- Penrith of Course was the reply - He was an ex Penrith junior rep/lower grade players from the 1990's to 2000's - had some involvement with all the Mays at Junior Level and knows their father pretty well.

Anyway he has also coached at Junior rep level and currently at junior club level in the Penrith District.

Thought I would ask him why Penrith continue to be so successful.

Junior numbers - they have a pool of players from a raft of Penrith Junior clubs and or associated Junior Clubs for each position when it comes to selecting Junior Rep Squads/Academy players so competition is pretty fierce to gain selection. - Advantage also of these players advancing through the pathways to seniors together.

Junior Rep sides train in a similar fashion to the senior sides so there is no shock factor when players advance through the pathways to seniors in the way training is conducted and what is expected of players.- of course training would become more intense at the seniors and especially NRL level.

All players are expected to maintain a level of fitness during the offseason - players don't come back having put on the KG's and needing to be flogged in pre-season training - Discipline a big factor

He says Ivan Cleary is meticulous with every aspect of the game either at a team level or what he requires from Individuals in the position they play - i.e they do the relevant drills countless times until he is satisfied - even when they nail the drills he get's the players to do them again and again and again - Billy Smith was saying that's what Craig Bellamy does as well.

In his view Penrith players are no more fitter than players in other teams although he said that Cleary won't select , promote or sign any player who cannot play the required minutes of the position week in and week out. - The Expectation is that players are fit enough to play 80 minutes week in and week out even when they won't be

With the departures he was expecting Blaize Talagi to be 5/8 - Lindsay Smith starting prop - Liam Henry and Luron Patea as interchange props - Isaiah Papali'i starting or Interchange - Jesse or Casey McLean on the wing

Doesn't think Penrith's level will drop too much for 5 in a row to be out of the question.

Probably after the business - thinks the Roosters will make the 8 as still a strong squad - said the Roosters pathway system is as good as anyone's with the central coast connection.

Did he mention when he might have a spell? Robbo has achieved legendary stuff for the club and will always be held rightly in great esteem. But...everyone/thing has a shelf life and it feels like we've squeezed the lemon dry with him as Head Coach. I'd love to see him stay on as a Chief administrator or Coaching consultant and be around to transition the next guy. I can't see us winning another flag with the current structure, but please don't ask me the banal question of who replaces him. That's not my job.

Only missed the finals once in 2016.

I go by the Brian Snitker view - making the play offs is an achievement - that's in a 162 game regular season - still valid for NRL even though a 24 game regular season.

Only one team can win it and Penrith have just been better than any other team for the past 4 seasons - best team in 2020 as well but had a Barry Crocker in the GF - down 26-0 after 46 minutes - lost 26-20- Certainly learnt from that.

Has the lemon been squeezed dry for the other coaches as none of them have an answer to Penrith's boa constrictor game - not sure that 2025 will be any different - wait and see

Penrith regularly lose players but as the dude from the blinds and shutter company said - Penrith have a production line of players which is why they can afford to lose players as they have ready made replacements who have progressed through their pathways complemented by strategic signings and are able to continue on winning premierships.

The plan for success will always be to produce NRL standard players through the pathways complimented by strategic signings

Been a turnover of players for various reasons from 2024 but the youngsters coming into the top 30 squad and the supplementary list get their chance to shine in 2025.

Certainly a tad early to write them off and advocate for the coach to be replaced.

Need to be careful that you don't throw the baby out with the bathn water.

Many on here have lauded and championed the cause of Wayne Bennett. Bennett went 6 years between premierships in 2000 and 2006 and is currently on an 18 season drought but is still considered one of the games greatest coaches. Robbo is in his longest period now without a premiership but I would suggest that he will be here for a while yet. I think we are going through a transition period off the field more so than on it. Letting players leave without signing replacements is contrary to how we have operated in the past but Robbo is bullish about our academy players. We look to be trying to replicate the Penrith system of promoting from within and only occassionally signing a big name player

Gus Gould doesn't have that luxury at the Bulldogs. It'll be interesting to see if he can buy them a premiership.
